MILWAUKEE — The number of foreclosure filings in 2008 was a new record for Wisconsin.

There were more than 25,000 foreclosure actions started in Wisconsin last year. Philip Crawford, founder of the Madison-based ForeclosureAlarm.com, says that’s up nearly 22 percent from the previous record last year.

Russell Kashian is a UW-Whitewater economics professor who analyzes state foreclosures. He says if the economy doesn’t get better, there may be at least the same amount this year.

The Wisconsin Realtors Association reported in November that the average sale price of existing homes dropped 5.3 percent in the third quarter to $160,000. Nationally, home prices fell 9 percent in the third quarter.

I wonder how many were in Rock co.? And i do believe it is going to get worse. And i do think most of these forclosings are based on jobs lost IMO If changes are not made we are in for worse then we imagined............

RAF - you can do that, but you can't cover for long periods. I wonder how many of these foreclosures are job related vs. over extended. I would like to see the statistics. Some people made bad decisions, and some flat out lost their job. Bottom line, it would suck to loose your home, but it isn't the end of the world. In America, you can bounce back. Just ask Donald Trump (bk king).

jtmek...planning for life's emergencies (loss of income, unforeseen car and home repairs, etc) is living within your means. If you go through life expecting your job is always secure you are setting yourself and family up for failure.

I think 2009 will be equally as bad if not worse. Just common sense, no jobs,,,no mortgage payment. Cars are being repo'd at a good clip as well.

Don't forget the people who lost their jobs who thought that would never happen. I guarantee many people are very depressed about their situations having lived in regular size houses. Things happen in life that aren't all about living beyond their means!

If consumers would make better choices and live within their means (stop trying to keep up with the Jones) we as a nation, and many of these home owners would not be in this predicament.

Every home I've bought was a foreclosure. Not all news is bad, depends on how we look at it.

SarahB, I don't believe that we've hit the "bottom" yet in future foreclosures. There were many risky loans made to people who didn't have good credit and they had NO money down. Also, many people went with adjustable rate mortgages so that they could buy a larger home, with the idea that in a few years when their credit was better they would then re finance to a fixed interest rate. We have become a have to have it now society, and we're all paying for it now.

I knew it was bad, but these numbers are even more dismal than I realized. Is anybody else as nervous about the economy as me?
