Oshkosh defense contract could be worth $1 billion
OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — The defense-related division of Oshkosh Corp. has received a defense contract that could be worth as much as $1.12 billion over 10 years.
The contract with the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency calls for replacement parts for military trucks.
The one-year deal can be renewed annually for up to 10 years.
The parts will be used on Oshkosh's tactical trucks, which are used for transport and logistics, not combat operations.
Last month the U.S. Army gave Oshkosh Defense a $250 million contract to provide 825 new military vehicles. That followed a November contract worth $51 million for Oshkosh to provide armor upgrades for military vehicles.
Shares of Oshkosh Corp. rose 96 cents, or 9.3 percent, to $11.26 in morning trading Monday.

*So does anyone know what kind of transport vehicles they are making? At 303K per vehicle, I can only imagine what they might be. And everything military (except their enlisted pay) is over inflated. Seriously.*
The 500 dollar hammers were just cover to secretly fund and build things like the SR-71.
Also, consider that plants which produce a lot of military hardware are union-shops.

Oshkosh defense products are mainly for logistics, though there are a few armored personnel carriers and the like.

.
It's a fairly successful company although they lost the last big contract they wanted, the future Humvee replacement.

.
With the Iraq War winding down there will be a few years of equipment replacements but it is not really an expanding business that would need to rush into converting a closing auto plant.

Oshkosh Truck builds the large tank transport semis for the Army. They also build logistic transport vehicles for portable bridges and cranes, ect. for the Army.
The "Hummer" trucks used are outdated now and are being replaced by the MRAP truck being made by International Truck & Engine of Chicago, IL.

this is great news for wisonsin and oshkosh. Maybe some type of Oshkosh/GM deal could be reached to put the plant back in to some type of action.

My friend's dad worked for Oshkosh Corp and said they made large transport vehicles. These vehicles are huge and are the type of vehicles you'd see carrying missles and such. I don't think they do 'combat' vehicles per se, but I could be wrong.

I doubt they are worth that much but I'm glad a WI company at least got the contract.

*How much money is wasted on our bloated military budget?*
One of the federal governments only constitutionally-mandated tasks is to provide for the common defense. So, in essence, most of its other expeditures can be classified as waste long, long before defense spending.
*made Humvees over there more roadside bomb-proof.*
Do people seriously think that everything and everyone in the military can be made impervious to projectiles?
If the military had somehow made these vehicles impenetrable, people would moan and groan that they only got 1 mpg due to their enormous, armor-plated bulk.

How much money is wasted on our bloated military budget? At least, this is not the billions we gave to Halliburton for money that the Government Budget Oversight office concluded had been unaccounted for. Of course, we were giving them that money at the same time as we failed to invest in basic hardware that would have made Humvees over there more roadside bomb-proof.
