City to conduct nationwide search for chief
Janesville will conduct a nationwide search for its next police chief, but it won't hire a search firm, the police and fire commission decided tonight.
City Manager Eric Levitt estimated the city could save $20,000 to $25,000 by not hiring a search firm.
The commission offered the position of acting chief to Deputy Chief Dave Moore, and he accepted.
Chief Neil Mahan is retiring Jan. 30.

Your right. Public opinion does have weight...very little weight. Experience, Education and Knowledge. No one should be complaining that the City of Janesville is trying to find the BEST candidate to be the next Chief of Police. If Moore in the end is that person great! It not, then so be it.

ljs64 - if Moore fits all of the qualifications AND has the community support (as stated in a poll or postings) then that is a bonus. I disagree with you. Public opinion does have weight.

An unofficial poll would be exactly that. Unofficial. The city has to go through what is called.........The hiring process. Just because one individual is the popular choice doesn't mean the city should just pick him/her. The city must still go through the HIRING PROCESS. A gazette poll would provide absoluting no benefit to anyone.

I knew Dave Moore when we were kids at Craig High School. He started at the bottom at JPD and moved up through the ranks. You'd think since he stuck with the city for 30 years, and came up through the ranks he'd be a shoo-in. Let Moore have the job and be done with it.

Another Yes to Dave Moore. How do we get the point across that the people want Moore as Police Chief? Anybody have any ideas? Could the Gazette do an unofficial poll and provide the info to the city?

Hire Within, I agree, we have lost too many jobs in Janesville. It's about time the city realizes the benefit from retention.

Maybe the PFC wants to look at diverse candidates?

Actually the city could SAVE 20-25,000. I am sure it will cost more than that to actually do the national process, I do not know why that figure is not posted.

So is the PFC saying the JPD is not capable of creating officers good enough to become a chief? Nice vote of confidance.

I think David Moore is exactly the man for the job. What is wrong with this city?

YES!!! Hire from within. We have lost too many jobs in janesville to other states! Let's take it back and hire someone who loves our city and has a stake in it. You know there ar epeople qualified here and the grass is not always greener on the other side! (or the snow whiter?)

I think JVPD should hire within. By doing so it is likely the new chief would stay and not for a few years. What happens if they hire the new chief from the east coast and he or she is here for a few years and moves back? Back to square one of finding a new chief.

We have several well-qualified candidates for chief within the department. It should be a swift and easy process to decide on one of them. A lot of time and money could be saved this time. What's the rationale for the national search? A dedicated, hardworking, well trained officer who understands the department and local area would seem to be a great choice at a time when there are many challenges facing the community. Let's get a good decision made and move on.

What don't we understand about not hiring from within. Public works Director Jack Messer 4yrs and back home to Kansas and now Neil 5 yrs and back to Calf. Keep it within (David Moore)

It will be a crock if Moore is not retained as permanent chief. He is more than qualified. I'm with a couple of you others that feel Moore is the best man for the job. No where will you find a person that is more dedicated to Janesville than he.

what a joke did we not learn from the last time. promote within. that is how you keep officers to stay here by assuring them that there is a chance someday they could be police chief. They have payed there dues to the city. By doing this your telling me that none of our officers are qualified. not true. so give one of them the job

doc0430, the Gazette observed that there was a *pattern* of alternating between inside and outside searches, but there was never a decision made to do an inside search.

When did this culture of hiring people from outside one's region begin? I think it was the 1970s. How has our society fared since this outsider-paradigm has flourished?
Citizens languish under governmental regimes that are run by people that have no connection to their flock and manage us rabble for 20 years or more, get a pension, and then head back to their home region.
Currently, our nation (villages, cities, counties, states, and fed) is on the verge of bankruptcy; perhaps we are already bankrupt. The government (much of which is run by outsiders to their regions of work) should let us know one way or the other in a year and a half or so, that we went bankrupt as a nation in 2006.
In an economy like ours with so much unemployment there must be some poor local schlep out there that has a ton of police science background, that is way underemployed at a local police force, and is stuck bagging groceries to make ends meet.
Why don't we just hire a local person and god forbid if they screw up we can just fire them and start over, what a novel idea.
But then there is outsider-paradigmn logic - silly me.

If you don't hire Moore they may as well start searching for his replacement, I thought the next Chief was to be hired from within......What the heck happened?
