JANESVILLE -- The city of Janesville has declared a snow emergency starting at 8 p.m. today, Friday.

During the snow storm, plowing efforts will focus on maintaining primary arterial and collector streets within the citym according to a city news release. "The clearing of snow from residential streets will occur after arterial and collector streets have been plowed and is anticipated to begin at 10 p.m., given current forecast conditions.

A snow emergency means that all vehicles must be removed from city streets and public parking lots until snow plowing operations are complete. To ensure that you do not receive a parking ticket, move your vehicle before 8 p.m. and keep it off city streets until they have been completely plowed.

If you are unable to park in a driveway or garage, vehicles can be parked in one of six downtown municipal parking lots in a designated snow emergency parking stall. The specially marked stalls are located in:

-- East Wall Street lot at East Wall Street and North Parker Drive

-- Municipal Building lot at West Wall Street and North Jackson Street

-- South High Street lot at West Court Street and South High Street

-- Senior Center lot at St. Lawrence Avenue and Water Street

-- Hedberg Public Library lot on Water Street

-- River/Union Street lot at South River Street and Union Street

Fines for parking on the streets during a snow emergency are $20. Police may begin issuing tickets to violators before plowing begins.

Residents can get additional snow emergency information on the city’s Web site at www.ci.janesville.wi.us or by calling (608) 755-SNOW. To report problems or concerns, call 755-3110.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got home tonight to find my street was already plowed. It usually gets plowed after I've done the driveway.

To all those in their big trucks - I am sorry that I don't have a great big truck. Instead I have a crappy little car. My tank costs about 20 bucks to fill up and I only do that once every couple of weeks. My crappy little car gets me to work and back and where ever else I need to go. But it doesn't plow through snow like your huge monsters so BACK OFF!!!!!! Isn't it illegal to pass on a city street?

The police need to ticket ahead of time...who wants to wade through waist deep snow after the plows go by to place the ticket on the windshield.

They're supposed to be off the street the moment the snow emergency begins, so they are already in violation when they get the ticket.

I just like this statement: Police may begin issuing tickets to violators before plowing begins.
.
So in other words you could have a ticket on your car before the plow even comes through. That's the way to be proactive. Let's ticket people even before they do something wrong. "but officer I wasn't speeding." "I know, but I am sure you will later."
