MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee police say a hug at a McDonald's restaurant led to a $100,000 theft.

Detective Robert St. Onge says a woman in her 20s approached and hugged a 75-year-old woman at the restaurant. The younger woman claimed the two had met at the restaurant previously.

St. Onge says the two chatted and the older woman mentioned her mother's recent death. The younger woman consoled her and asked for her address to bring her flowers.

St. Onge says the older woman later began to feel uneasy, so she parked down the street from her house when she went home. She saw two people leaving her backyard.

Inside, the woman found her home ransacked and $100,000 that her mother had kept in a metal box was missing.

If it turns out they wanted money for pot, thekid will blame the government and what the world reasonably believes about pot smoking.

With the way the justice system works, these two pieces of scum will probably get a slap on the hand, if they ever find them. It will probably come out that they were abused as children or have some sort of mental problems that explain why they did this (sarcasm!) With all the responsiblity taken away from society for the crimes it commits it's no wonder people do these things! Here's a thought: THROW THE BOOK AT THEM AND MAKE THEM AN EXAMPLE!!! Then others will think twice about doing this sort of stuff!

The only sense I can make out of it is: she suspected something was going on and didn't want to be seen near the house. But what was she supposed to do if she confronted the thieves? And if she saw people leaving her property, why didn't she get a license number or watch where they went too?

Wow. I dont even know where to begin. I was upset by the article by itself until I read all the comments. That upset me more. What the heck ever happened to trust,honesty,integrity....a person cant even lean on anothers shoulder without getting robbed !! Someone said, keep it all in a bank...well kiss MY butt !! People should be aloud to keep THEIR money wherever they want ! Hating other people isnt the answer either.I know someone who does that everyday and she is miserable. I will never understand why people are the way they are. Some are good, some are bad and some just play nice on the blogs to save face. i have most certainly done my share of bad things in life but I would NEVER rob someone !!

The important thing about all those religious people in prison is that prisons are over crowded due to recidivism -repeat offenders.

Yes, interesting that billnewbie would throw that out there. He doesn't like it when I point out that the most religious people in this country are in prison and that almost one hundred percent of all prisoners are religious.

The same goes for people with tattoos. (Apologies to Beth Wheelock.)

Posted by billnewbie: most criminals are raised in single parent families.

Anybody care site a fact based source for this going back a few hundred years?
This statement is as ignorant as it is derogatory.

I don't know if home owners or the auto insurance covered the contents of the van. I know that ordinarily if stuff is stolen out of your vehicle, it's covered by home owners.

hannah, it's amazing. What are the odds that these crooks would luck on a person who kept all that money at home?!!! I was kind of wondering if it was an insurance scam.

I had a van totaled once and I used to carry about 30 bucks in quarters for tolls before I got an I-Pass. All the good stuff in the van plus the 30 bucks was stolen by the tower or the people at the junkyard. The insurance company reimbursed me for everything including the 30 bucks, no questions asked.

I haven't had time to read all the posts, but I wonder if home owners insurance covers cash -especially in huge amounts.

I think that the comment made that this young criminal was raised in a single parent family was not intended as an inference that all children of single parent families are criminal but that most criminals are raised in single parent families, though Kinsohn will have to clear that up himself. For myself, I can say that a child in a single parent family has opportunities for mischief that 2 parent family children do not. Most of us raised that way do not eventually commit crimes, but it is well known that many do.
.
I think that the larger issue has to do with morality, or actually the lack thereof. How can a person stoop to such depths of character as to steal from a grieving elderly woman? The answer, it seems to me, is because there is nothing more important to these criminals than themselves. There is no one whose opinion matters enough to such as these to restrain their criminality. In short, they lack shame and guilt. For decades we’ve been told by psychological experts that guilt and shame are themselves an evil thing that must be stamped out for our own good. Crimes such as these are the result of such a spurious philosophy.
.
We’ve gone to great lengths to stamp out morality and its associated guilt and shame. Crimes such as the one in the story above are becoming commonplace as a result of those efforts.

This smells to me a bit like an "Irish Travellers" scam. A number of setups used by itinerant con artists involve the elderly, such as fraudulent home repair schemes, or just using house or property work as an excuse to case it or access the valuables while the owner is distracted. So it's possible that the girl was actually working WITH one or both parents.

I am sorry the remark about her not growing up with a father has nothing to do with it. I grew up without a father as he died my kids grew up without a father because he chose not to be there, my kids are not criminals and I am not one. I am sick of hearing people saying that, whether a father or mother is not in a kid’s life then it is the responsibility of the remaining parent to teach right from wrong. That comment is so wrong.

KINSOHN---How ignorant! My father passed away when I was a little girl---I grew up without a father. I now have a Masters degree, a fulfilling job, my sister has a law degree and my brother a PHD. Just because people are raised by a single parent does NOT mean they are going to grow up and be a dead beat.

It's hard for me to understand how people can do things like this to someone else, particularly the elderly. But then I have a conscience.
