Hearing on proposed Walgreens

Janesville citizens have a chance to weigh in Monday on the Walgreens proposed for the corner of West Court and Arch streets.

Manager of Building and Development Services Gale Price says the new development says a lot about a community when the city can promote new development in a particular area. He says there is new housing stock on the west side that needs to be served.

The plan commission holds a public hearing on the building's conditional use permit at 6:30 Monday night.

The city has open dialogue with Walgreens about the five points store. He says the city is concerned about the long-term service to the Fourth Ward neighborhood. He wants to provide for the needs of the residents in the Fourth Ward, whether it is Walgreens or a different store in the future. Walgreens has given no indication it will close the five points location.

Why should there be another Walgreens? CVS? How many are there? How far apart are they? There is one thing not discussed here and that is land use. Another is how much traffic will be generated in residential neighborhoods. Janesville wants Walgreens for tax revenue. Walgreens wants Janesville for profits. Citizens in favor of having more pharmacy convenience stores want them closer to their homes, some even want the $7/hr jobs. But of course I am wasting my breath because some overzealous, self righteous jerk on this site will tell me I am wrong. Not sure I care. It is my opinion.

Walgreens can't hold a candle to the ABC Stores in Hawaii.

When asked what "ABC" stands for...the answer was "All Blocks Covered"
.

Let the free market decide.

Every big city has more than it's fair share of Walgreens. I live in the suburbs of Milwaukee and every few blocks you go there is a Walgreens. Some however are better than others. So maybe bringing in a new one will bring more merchandise than before, depending on the size. I do agree though, there needs to be more space in between all these stores.

Wow - where did people get their prescriptions filled before Walgreens flooded this town? Will this really bring more business to town, or will this simply take away business from the pharmacies that are already here? And, speaking of, how much of Walgreens money stays here in Janesville compared with that pharmacy on Court Street nearby (can't remember the name), or any other locally-run phamacies here in town? But, I agree, what business is it of the city to determine whether yet another pharmacy is needed or not? And it sounds like the only sway they have is whether or not to allow a drive-through, is that correct?

More jobs when we need it. Cheers to Walgreens.

apparently walgreens feels this community could be well served with another store.
the south-side store has been a wonderful addition.
according to news sources, the cost to build a new store is approximately $5 million.
i would think with the cost being that high, walgreens knows whether or not this store will be profitable.
plus, more jobs.
and all the haters will say low paying jobs ($8.00 typically for general workers to start), they'll need two pharmacists (or more), they'll need assistants for the pharmacists and managers.
plus, the company has a very good profit sharing plan and other good benefits.
this is a good idea. plus, as is the case for the south side location, it's a good thing to see new businesses come to an area of town other than the northeast corridor.

Why are you people so against bringing in more businesses to a part of town? Who are you to decide whether it's worth while? Walgreens is obviously doing something right. Any new business, is good business. This is all part of re-structuring the west side of town. Also know as the westgate project. This has all been discussed before.

If people can't walk or drive another 5 or 6 blocks to get there, something's wrong. Is it really profitable for Walgreens to build another one with 4 other ones in Janesville? I wouldn't be surprised in a couple years that some bean counter behind a desk realizes this and decides to close one or two. Janesville needs another Walgreens like they need another auto parts store.

Ditto for the wannabes who post their mindless comments on here: Just stay out of the way and let people run their businesses.

I like the part where it says "He wants to provide for the needs of the residents", referring to "Manager of Building and Development Services Gale Price". It's a government mindset, he actually provides nothing to anyone. The best that government can do is just get out of the way and let real people run their businesses.

I hope they do build there. That would be even more competition for Sentry Foods. Their prices are higher than Kwik Trip for milk and bread! And those convenience stores are notoriously high. I wish we had kept Piggly Wiggly and given Sentry to Evansville.

No, you actually have had a chance to make comment on EVERY Walgreens and every other pharmacy with a drive through. Apparently you are not motivated enough to show up to a public hearing. All drive through uses are reviewed in cy the city.

At least JVL residents get a chance. We didn't get a choice to our 12th and 13th pharmacy.
