MADD lays off 2 of 3 Wisconsin staffers
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Mothers Against Drunk Driving says it will reduce its staff in Wisconsin from three to one person at the end of the month.
MADD's national spokeswoman Heidi Castle says MADD Wisconsin will lay off executive director Kari Kinnard and development director Michelle Puetz. The remaining staff person will be victim assistance coordinator Lindsay Desormier.
Castle says donations to MADD Wisconsin have increased recently, but they are not enough to cover its budget.
The cuts come as lawmakers and advocates are renewing efforts to toughen Wisconsin's drunken driving laws. Democratic state Rep. Tony Staskunas of West Allis says the timing is unfortunate.
Castle says MADD is cutting staff in seven states, including Wisconsin.

A person can be all for getting drunk drivers off the road AND at the same time think that MADD goes a little nazi-ish in how they operate.
I believe that SuperDAve hit it pretty damned accurate as to how MADD seems to have moved to the anti-drinking end of the spectrum.

sannio: donations may have increased recently, but my understanding is they had almost dried up completely starting in 2004 when (then) Attorney General Peggy Lautenschlager was arrested for drunk driving. As I remember, there was controversy over whether she was treated preferentially, and also over MADD's response. Since I have never supported MADD, that's why I asked those of you who do (or did).
Personally, I don't support MADD because they have morphed into an anti-drinking organization, instead of just an anti-drunk driving one.

One would think that, despite economic woes, that MADD would be increasing its impact in Wisconsin this year. I am referring to the anticipated legislative battle to bring the hammer down on OWI sentencing.

If donations have increased recently, why aren't they meeting their budget anymore? Confusing. What's up with that SuperDave?

My understanding is that funding has dried up due to the fact that enforcement has been selective. Am I right, MADD supporters?

We have the highest convictions of drunk driving in the country. I have personally seen what driving drunk can do to an individual. Dreams have been crushed due to those accidents.
It goes both ways. I have seen innocent victims have to have multiple surgeries, as well as the drunken drivers. I am a nurse on the Orthopedic floor. It is not so flippant when you see the amount of pain and suffering these individuals are in.

You wouldn't be so flip if one of your family members were hurt or killed by a drunk driver.
Shame on you all.
