PETA not chicken about baring it all

A group of animal rights activists protesting outside of Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant at West Layton and South Howell avenues this afternoon included two women who took off their clothes when everybody else was putting on more layers.

In a stunt that the national People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization has replicated in other cities, PETA employees Colleen Higgins, 22, and Erin Edwards, 26, "stripped" to draw attention to what they call "the naked truth" about KFC’s treatment of chickens prior to slaughter.

The women held sandwich boards protesting KFC’s practices across their essential areas, but were bare-skinned from the bra line up. Their bare legs were covered with nylons and both wore snow boots.

Though the sun was shining Saturday at noon, temperatures were in the single digits and were expected to hit a high of only 12 degrees, according to the weather desk at WTMJ4.

The wind chill factor during the day made temperatures feel more like they were between five degrees above zero and 10 degrees below zero. Tomorrow is expected to be only marginally more tolerable with a high of 16 by the lake and 10 inland.

At the KFC protest, Edwards’ legs trembled uncontrollably above her boots. Both said they had never taken off clothing in colder weather.

Edwards is from Virginia; Higgins is from Atlanta.

"It’s 60 degrees there," Higgins said.

Among the 20 or so people standing in front of KFC, Kim Isaacs, the president of the local Citizens United for Animals, was properly outfitted with a hooded parka, a scarf and boots.

She was thrilled out the turnout for the demonstration. Six days earlier, on another dismal Wisconsin winter day, Isaacs explained, only two people had shown up to protest the International Mink Show at a hotel by the airport.

"Our groups try to work together on this stuff," Isaacs said.

Looking at the shivering PETA women, she reconsidered.

"But we don’t take our clothes off. We know what it’s like in Wisconsin."

How stupid is this!! I think they were just women who wanted to bare all for their own fun and decided to do it at a KFC to try and make it legitimate!!! What a desperate act for attention! If they were frostbit, too bad, they brought it on themselves!

To imply that all dogs are sick is cruel and inhumane. You better watch it or you may get a visit from naked women. They will show you what's what.

Wow! I'm glad that KFC, and most fast food joints, make me sicker than a dog.... Will PETA protest that statement of a dog?

I'm not an animal nut, but if I know animals are being especially mistreated or killed inhumanely, I will boycott that business.
.
I will probably avoid KFC because of this.

Peta is protesting for what? It said that it was the miss treatment of chickens. What type of abuse are they crying about in front of KFC?

nutty,
box meal -- gotta love it.

how stupid is PETA -- they want to protest (to drive away business i assume) so they bring in females (i cannot say babes cause really, who knows) who will "bare all" and they think that tactic will help accomplish their goal?

last i checked, i have lots of healthy red blood, and just about any healthy red-blooded man will at least take a peek while ordering their thighs, legs and breasts.

personally, i'm a thigh and leg man and prefer dark meat.

but breasts (which are white meat) ain't so bad.

OK, I'll bite. These PETA people were in Milwaukee, right? From the comments here and elsewhere, I don't think PETA is doing the animal rights issue much good with these stunts.

What about the plants who are subjected to herbicide and die so that your lettuce, tomatoes, ect are ready to eat.

Where is the PETA protest at for that?

But I believe animals need to be treated humanely until they are painlessly killed for our use. It's the least we can do.
