Snowmobilers run over ducks in Fort Atkinson

FORT ATKINSON, Wis. (AP) — Snowmobilers ran over and killed 60 ducks in two incidents while racing across open water beneath a bridge on the Rock River in downtown Fort Atkinson, police said Monday.

It's the third reported incident in Wisconsin this month of snowmobiles running over wildlife.

Police Lt. Jeff Davis said Monday the Fort Atkinson killings occurred on Friday and Sunday nights and likely involved different snowmobilers. Four other ducks were severely injured, he said.

Snowmobiles travel so fast when they skip across the open water in the dark that ducks cannot respond quickly enough to get out of the way, he said.

"Last Thursday, we lost one snowmobile that went through there," he said. "If you don't hit it fast enough, you can get stuck and lose your sled."

It's possible the killings weren't intentional because it is hard to see the ducks under the bridge at night, Davis said. Still, no one stopped to report the weekend killings, he said.

Ducks being killed by snowmobilers in that stretch of the river has occurred before, including 25 in February 2004, Davis said.

Jefferson County Snowmobile Alliance President Larry Chwala said snowmobile clubs and dealers in the area have offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of last weekend's duck killers.

Two weeks ago, 57 mallard ducks were run over and killed by a snowmobiler on the Fond du Lac River near Fond du Lac in an incident of water skipping over a hole in the ice.

Three Weyauwega men were charged with animal cruelty in what the state Department of Natural Resources described as thrill killing of five whitetail deer by running over them with snowmobiles just south of Waupaca on Jan. 9.

whoanellie - maybe these sub-human idiots will run down YOUR pet next time they are looking for a thrill kill. No big deal though...it's just an animal, right? Or would that be different because it is YOUR animal and not some wild animal?

Just an animal?? That maybe what the snowmobilers thought. When we cease to respect life, animal or human that is when things like this happen. Don't lessen the importance of ALL life in this world.

I do agree with you. If you have a pet, I believe you should take care of it and treat it like you would any other member of your family. But I still blieve that human life should be above an animal as God would have it. It's not nice what these snowmobilers did but it was just an animal after all. We should get as heated up over human life. (even more!)

We can sympathize with both whoanellie. But the taking of any life is irresponsible and wrong. And we do get it. Life is life. Mohatmas Ghandi said "The greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way they treat their animals."

cardtrader,
Please don't use the word hunters when talking about the actions of these individuals. This has nothing to do with hunting. Hunters started the first of the conservation efforts in this state and still fund an overwhelming number of conservation projects today.

Once again some morons kill with total disregard for life. I don't understand the mentality of these people. Obviously their mentality isn't that high. Total idiots. What was the thrill? Huge machines driving over a flock of innocent ducks? Why is there such a total disrespect of life?
Can someone explain this ? I just don't get it.

Why not forbid such activities at that bridge (and some other areas), and put signs warning of fines before a human being dies, rescuers dive and search unnecessarily, cost taxpayers money, all along with more animals dead? It would be a faster, cheaper way than liscensing all drivers and such, and might save lives. Just a thought.

Ducks huddle together in large masses in the night through the morning. That's why it is possible to kill so many ducks with just one or two snowmobiles.

I work right by there and the ducks are there all year round. They are usually always huddled together under that bridge in the winter. This is starting to get ridiculous now being the second time I have seen this happen. We sit and watch snowmobilers contemplate going under that bridge all the time because it never freezes under there. We have also seen a few of them go right in the water. The river on the other side of that bridge wasn't even frozen as of last week. These people are crazy to be out on that river in the first place. Something should be done about this situation. It is dangerous and these ducks shouldn't have to suffer. It took a long time to get all those ducks back after the last time this happened. I will miss hearing them at night when I am working. It is just sad to hear that it has happened again.

I am appalled there is nothing stopping snowmobiles from running up and down the river like this. I drove over the bridge in Fort Atkinson 2 weeks ago and saw large sections of open water with snowmobile tracks covering the river. The tracks go near the open water and through it. This is unbelievable. How many times have we heard news of snowmobilers dying from plunging through the ice? How dare they risk the lives of the search and rescue teams for absolute ignorance. I do not care if a snowmobile can go fast enough to span the open water or not. The message it sends to kids is the ice is safe. I can't imagine the loud rawr of the engines homeowners living on the river hear as the machines ramp up engine speed in an attempt to keep the snowmobile afloat. I know what it sounds like out on the lake, and I think it borders on that of a Harley or a truck that is straight-piped with glass-packs. Certainly alcohol must be a factor because it is maddening to think someone would do this on their own free will knowing of the historic record of snowmobile deaths on this river. What utter disregard for anyone but themselves. Just imagine what your children or parents will think when they come to identify your frozen, waterlogged body that you forced area rescue teams to recover. If only it were that easy to be grossly indifferent, I would suggest that any recovery efforts be postponed until Spring in such cases where reckless abandon is apparent. If only it were that easy.

Maybe the DNR needs to require that snowmobilers have a special license. That way, when these jerks decide to terrorize wildlife, their licenses can be revoked.

Am I missing something, or does that number seem a bit high for an "accidental" run over? How do you kill
60 ducks, with one snowmobile, if you only make one pass? Even if there were 4 of them, it seems sort of off.
