Immigration authorities auditing companies

CHICAGO — The Obama administration is investigating hundreds of U.S. businesses as part of its strategy to focus immigration enforcement on employers who hire illegal workers, including, apparently, some in Wisconsin.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is notifying businesses of plans to audit their I-9 forms. Those are employment eligibility documents that employers fill out for every worker.

The Homeland Security Department says immigration officers have served "Notices of Inspection" to 625 businesses. By comparison, 503 such notices were issued to businesses last year.

ICE spokeswoman Gail Montenegro says 32 notices are being sent to businesses within the six states the Chicago ICE office oversees.

Those states are Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri and Kentucky. Montenegro didn’t have further details.

That's right. Illegal, or in other words, criminal.
If they really wanted to do "right", they would have done the RIGHT thing and come here legally. Not immediately broken our laws.
It doesn't matter what country you're from. You come here illegally, you don't deserve any benefits from here.

Can we please stop calling these people "undocumented"? These people are here illegally, hence the term "illegal immigrant".........

And what is the "right choice NOW" that you are suggesting? Leave all your family and friends and the only home you have ever known? This is where I feel the debate needs to center around. This is not compassionate, humane, or fair.

Granted, people may not starve to death (though some surely would) had they stayed in their home countries; however, yes a better life. I think we need border control if we are stop the illegal immigration. Once here, I feel like our communities would be better if we accepted all our neighbors as exactly that.

The only way an employer can get away with paying less than the minimum wage is to have emplyees who are not seen equal in the eyes of the law. Give everyone in our community equal access to justice and you'll see how quickly that practice will end.

I don't think that any of us is advocating more people coming into this country without documentation. However, the assumption that every Spanish speaking person is either illegal or from Mexico is offensive... There are MANY MANY ways that one can be here legally and not speak English. There are entire Spanish speaking communities in the South- where communities have been for generations and not spoken English. There are many ways to be a legal resident or citizen and not speak English. So, assuming that you have to be illegal to speak Spanish is silly. Secondly, only approximately 50% of the undocumented in this country are from Mexico... per the 2000 census estimates, Roughly: 5.6 million from North and Central America, 1 million South America, 1.1 million from EUROPE, 1.4 million from Asia, etc...

How do illegal's think the US got the way it did, by the hard working people, after WW II they got an education and built our country what it is today, illegals say Mexico is a third world country then why dont they go back and do something about it.

SRK, although I *get* what you are saying....I do not think my tax dollars should go for education breaks for illegals. I don't think my tax dollars should be wasted converting every dang thing to spanish so they don't have to learn a new language and are treated fairly and equally. Maybe that's offensive. I'm fairly compassionate but I don't think it's fair for illegals and others to come here expecting things to change to accomodate them. I think we already have spread things too thin.

And really what's the logic for doing things the right legal way if there are no benefits and some other jack can jump the fence and get the same things?

Everyone has a choice and although some might be kids and just coming into adulthood they can still make the right choice NOW.

Please temper your comments with humanity.
-
I understand (hardly, but I do) the desire to stop illegal immitgration, especially within the context of our current economy. However, illegal or not, people.
-
And yes, educate all. If a person meets the residence requirements, why not provide economic assistance. If a person meets the other requirements of needing education assitance, they probably don't make enough to pay much if anything in taxes anyway. Plus, they are likely renting property, which goes towards property taxes.
-
Most people who are likely to go to state universities are young people, people who probably weren't given a choice in coming or not. Imagine you are 19 years old, just graduated from high school, a school district you were a part of for the last 8 years. All your friends and family live here. This is the only home you know - and yet you are considered in the eyes of the law, unequal.
-
Look, you want to end immigration? Stop it at the border. Don't retroactively punish those who didn't have a choice. And those that did have a choice? It wasn't a real choice. A choice between your family's survival and the alternative? Let's get real.
-
Let's be compassionate. It is easy when times are easy, but true character shows itself when the going gets tough. What do you stand for?

Hint hint... ICE: Pick 625 businesses you DIDN'T send notices to, inspect them, and claim it was part of your plan all along. You'll pick up beaucoup public relations points with a lot of American citizens.

politicians in general are deceptive. Republican or Democrat. Very few that are not. I just people would realize as much as they think about politicions.....they really have no idea what is going on. they are not in their shoes. All the whining and complaining gets you where? in the same exact place you were in to start with. Many people hated Bush.....he was just trying to do his job the way he felt it needed to be done. He was deceptive....he was a moron...and he did a lot of stupid things. Every president i can remember has done the same thing and obama will do the same thing. The only difference is what party they are associated with because people hop on that band wagon. Woot! im a republican so nothing a republican can do is wrong...and everything a democrat does is wrong. The same goes for those people that are democrats 2. People need to grow up and realize...for the most part....they are all scum.

when I worked for this local company here in janesville. heck they wanted nearly every peice of I.D. i had with photos included and photocopied. yet others employers are not allowed to ask for proof? and this was in the year 2000. go figure

The real problem is the illegals that have stolen s.s. #'s and identification. They can look legit to an employer and get away with what they are doing. There is so much of this going on its amazing. Its time to clamp down on this crap and start giving jobs (even if they pay poorly) to AMERICAN'S.
