WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — Some fireworks retailers in central Wisconsin say the sour economy is affecting their sales heading into the Fourth of July weekend.

Jerry Bamke of Fireworks Country in Wittenberg says customers are spending less this year and commenting that they have to cut back.

Derrick Sukow of Fireworks Depot near Merrill says traffic and sales are down from a year ago. He says people who are buying are settling for some of the cheaper fireworks, not the top quality ones.

Gloria Jaegler of Old Glory Fireworks in Merrill says she has noticed more comparison shopping as people for look for the best deals because of the economy.

I'm already annoyed with them! this whole week it has been nothing but noise when we go to bed at night!!! We still have to work in the morning and do not appreciate it, we get up at 3am!!! Do it on the 4th and get it over with!!I even had to work today so I'm a little grumpy from being kept awake half the night! I go to the fireworks and do celebrate on the 4th, but that's it and I think other people should think of people like us who still have to work and get up early. The 4th is only one day,not a whole month!!

No hannah The shot spotter is only used in a one square mile area of the east side of Beloit. So far Beloit is the only city in Wisconsin to use this technology. And no I never said that only people in Beloit use guns, dont put words in my mouth. Outside of neighbors callling the police or being caught red handed by the police the acousitc triangualtion method that is used by the shot spotter is the only other effective means by which to locate fireworks. BTW the area where the shot spotter is deployed just happens to be "The Hood" in Beloit

If you can be ticketed for shooting off fireworks, why are they legal to sell in the first place? Catch 22?Happy (safe) 4th of July everyone

ozzman- I am sure it isnt ONLY for the HOOD you speak of.
Like I mentioned my old neighbors were busted this way LAST year ON 4th of JULY. The police told them how they were caught and said they are looking for more people and ONLY on the 4th.

Where do you get such a story about ONLY used in the "hood"
Do people ONLY use guns in Beloit ???? Dont think so.

The technology used to pinpoint gunshots is only in the "HOOD" in Beloit and it is an acoustic surveilance system not radar. Either way its BS For one day out of the year the cops shuold just look the other way and let people who are responsible with fireworks have some fun. Fireworks are only dangerous to people too stupid to not follow the directions and you cant save idiots from themselves.

I went to a fireworks tent this year. All they had was a very crappy selection at very high prices.

You can fire almost any firework in England. The place our ancestors risked all to leave because of all of their laws. Happy Independence day everyone!!!

hannah is correct. The technology used to pinpoint the location of gun shots can now be used to identify the location of fireworks.

Sales are also down as the price of fireworks increased between 30 and 50 percent from last year as an apparent explosion of a large warehouse and removal of govnt subsidies in china drove up the prices. And in Beloit the fireworks nazis are using the shot spotter system to detect fireworks and then sending in the gestapo to issue revenue citations.

YES THERE IS RADAR. It is called Spark radar. Sorry I couldnt think of the name immediately. If yould listen to the radio you would know what I am talking about. Beeferer knows about it too> He mentioned the airplane in another post. The radar detects spark (usually used for guns) then they use Navigation you do know what that is right? Then they send in the police!!

“New radar stuff”? Hmmm. You know, you might feel better and have less cantankerous posts if you just wrap some tin foil around your head, and snug it up tight with duct tape. Guaranteed to keep the radar from bothering you any more!

I'd rather flush 3 dollars down the toilet than purchase a Hot Pocket at my local grocery store. But do I? No. I eat that Hot Pocket and I enjoy it, because that is what being free is all about. Freedom isn't free folks.

It could be because of that new radar stuff. My old neighborhood was busted last year because of the radar thing. $200 fireworks, $225 ticket. YEAH seems worth it to me NOT!!

Beeferer: Funny and 100% true. I can't say I'm too surprised or disappointed. Although I feel for the retailers, the backyard attempts at fireworks displays amount to nothing more than annoying. There are plenty of good fireworks displays in the area.

I'm surprised anyone is buying fireworks. Instead of spending $50 on fireworks, why not do a video of yourself burning a fifty dollar bill? You would get a bigger reaction from people watching that than you would from people watching ho-hum sparklers and stinky tar-worms blackening your sidewalk.
