WADSWORTH, Ill. — A 24-year-old Wisconsin mother and her 1-year-old son have died in a head-on collision in northern Illinois that authorities believe was alcohol-related.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Susan Ewald says Nicole Polk of Algoma, Wis., was traveling southbound on I-94 Friday night near Wadsworth when her car crossed into the northbound lanes, striking another vehicle.

Ewald says open alcohol was found in Polk's car, and an autopsy is pending to determine whether alcohol was involved in the crash.

Polk and her son were declared dead at the scene by the Lake County coroner's office. Her 2-year-old son, who was also in the car, was taken by helicopter to an area hospital in critical condition.

Four people in the second vehicle were hospitalized with minor injuries and have been released.

One doesn't have to be an alcoholic to be a drunken driver.

In some countries, drinking and driving is punishable by death. A first time offense in El Salvador leads to execution by firing squad, while a second offense in Bulgaria also leads to execution. ■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□Why not here??? I have lost too many friends who were killed by drunken drivers. Time for America to wise up!

Is there ANYTHING in the report of pot? No I think it said ALCOHOL...I just love illiterate idiots that totally misreport a story to fit their own misguided sense of retardation. Learn to read and then maybe you'll actually get something right. Considering that poor child had to be a victim of its mothers ALCOHOLISM is a sad and truly immoral way of parenting. I do send my prayers to the 2 yr old and son and the rest of his family.

I do not condone what appears to have been done here. But let's wait and see what the report says (that is if we hear anymore about this story). Open intoxicants can simply mean she has a six pack with a couple missing. I do not agree with drunk driving, I have lost people to it, but we do not even know if she was drunk. If she was drunk then okay that was a stupid thing on her part and now people left in her life will have to pay for her mistake for the rest of theirs not to mention the child with her that will never even get to start school. It is possible she was taking home some left overs and the accident was caused by some other careless move. Get all the facts before you judge.

When are people going to wake-up and realize that "alcohol-related" is often used when any alcohol at all is found in the blood of a driver, even one that did not cause the accident. The authorities then use these statistics to make us very, very scared about the scourge of drunk-driving. Far more lives could be saved by improving our roads and providing affordable public transportation, but then that wouldn't legitimize the police state.

What is wrong with people? There is no excuse to drink & drive. But it takes an ignorant individual to put their children in this situation. This is soo unfortunate. My heart is breaking for the family and the surviving 2year old that has just had his mother and brother taken from him. This could have easily been avoided. Dont drink & drive people!!!

Because people like that dont want help, they want to make excuses for why they are the way they are and put all the blame on someone or something else. Everything is a crutch for these people. Until they hit bottom and can see the light of day they are going to keep doing what they do. No one his holding these people down except that bottle of alcohol they pour down there throat to escape real life. Quit making excuses for these people they make enough of there own, and as far as casting stones yes we as people of this Great Country get to cast stones it is one of our rights, and last I checked anything I have ever done wong has not taken the life of one of my children or the life of anybody

Funny how not one of you know her and yet every one of you think you have the right to judge her. And to all of you who say drunks are bad people should all be slapped. I know many MANY people who have had or have a drinking problem but that does NOT make them bad people. You don't know their life or what has happened that they make the decisions they do. I am not condoning what she did. She was so wrong for doing that, but to sit there and say she is a bad person is such bull. Like any of you haven't made bad choices in your life. Those without sin can cast the first stone. And none of you are perfect. So instead of sitting behind your computer casting judgement on someone you don't know.. maybe you should get off your butt and try helping people who may not be able to help themselves.

How many 'good people' drive drunk hit someone causing them injury and then run away? How many 'good people' drive WHILE consuming alcohol? How many 'good people' kill their children? No wonder WI is in such sad shape. If you consider someone drinking plowing into some innocent person, hurting them and then running - not getting help- but only thinking of themselves and getting out of there so THEY don't get into trouble a 'good person', I truly hope I or anyone I love, never meet such a 'good person'!

How many "good people" make bad decisions OVER AND OVER? Drunks make bad decisions over and over because they ONLY think of themselves! That IS NOT a good person. If she had been a good person she would not of have her kids in the car at 1 am while she's drinking. She would have been a good mother if those babies were home in bed at that hour.
Good people making bad decisions LEARN from their mistakes but it appears she has made this 'bad decision' before. She was a drunk, and I have yet to meet a drunk who is a 'good person'!

A bar fundraiser for a drunk
+
CAMPBELLSPORT, Wis. -- A bar fundraiser for a man accused of killing a woman while driving drunk has been canceled.

Fatties Bar near Campbellsport was planning to raise money for Jay Taylor.

He's accused of crashing his motorcycle while driving drunk in May, resulting in the death of his passenger, Crystal Daly.

Her family denounced the fundraiser for taking place at a bar, and for using Daly's photo in the fliers advertising the event.

Bar workers said that the event was canceled on Saturday

Janesvillean:

You are correct Wisconsin has a huge drunk driving problem, which the legislature has not dealt with in a meaningful way. Biggest problem is, that first offense drunk driving, in Wisconsin, is a municipal (civil) ordinance violation not a crime. In nearly every other state, first offense DUI is a crime. This begs to be changed. It shouts out that Wisconsin isn't concerned with DUI. The death rate shows it. First offense should be a criminal violation, perhaps with a token jail term to give the first offender an idea of what lies ahead. As long as the Wisconsin Tavern League and the legislature "high five" each other at the end of the day and adjourn to the bar, we won't have any change.

A sad way to end her life and more important her children's lives. A quick check of Wis Circuit court access, shows a prior conviction for causing injury while driving under the influence (2005) as well as a conviction for hit and run. Numerous civil court cases involving the children. Perhaps someone should have seen the danger to the children, by having her as their mother and removed them from the situation. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Sometimes it's hard to tell if alcohol is the culprit or simply an irresponsible parent.

This once great state of Wisconsin Breeds Drinking, it is like a right of passage to get drunk and drive because the state does nothing more than slap your hand for driving under the influence. Until that changes your taking your own life in your hands on any given friday or saturday night driving because that is when most of these terrible accidents happen

citizenofdarien/MadatDarien: Please heed the other postings here and don't add to Wisconsin's denial when it comes to drinking and driving. Even the newspapers in our neighboring states are taking notice. Just last week, the Rockford (IL) newspaper ran an editorial asking us in Wisconsin to wise up. I feel for the family of these latest victims, but I am also embarrassed that the driver is from my home state.

True, when I lived in Iowa, drunk driving was a rare occurrence, here it seems to be very common. Lax laws and a culture that revolves around drinking seem to me like the culprits. This state needs tougher laws and a major attitude adjustment about drinking.

How does a mother knowingly put her children at risk like that? The best cure I had for any bad driving behavior I had(speeding, tailgating, etc.) was to put my son in the car with me. I instantly became the best driver on the road. I would NEVER think to have even one drink if I was going to drive him anywhere with me. Parents, if you don't care about yourself, can you please think of your children?
