PARIS, Wis. — A Wisconsin prison inmate has been killed and two others seriously hurt after a transport van carrying 10 inmates from a job site rolled on a state highway.

Kenosha County sheriff’s officials said Saturday that the accident happened late Friday night in the town of Paris, about 35 miles south of Milwaukee.

A 24-year-old inmate died at the scene. He was from Oak Creek, but his name is being held pending notification of his family.

The seven other inmates were taken to hospitals, including two who were airlifted after suffering life-threatening injuries.

Officials said the driver veered off the road, possibly to avoid an animal, then overcorrected before the van rolled off State Highway 142. The sheriff’s office and Department of Corrections officials are investigating.

melstew7 and whythink: Knock knock! Anybody home? Apparently not!! Did I EVER say I didn't care that this guy died? Did I EVER say that I was MORE concerned with the cost? NO! People were on here bellyaching about "what did he do" and "bet his family doesn't care because they disowned him"... My point was WHO CARES! Someone is dead and 2 others have life threatening injuries because someone swerved to miss an animal. SENSELESS. Criminal or not, the deceased has a family who is mourning his death. That was my point...not how much the repair bill was going to be. Cars are material things and can be replaced and repaired...someone's child/sibling/spouse etc.., cannot! Clear???

I've swerved to avoid animals many times over the years. I guess it could possibly be different if I was driving a passenger van or a truck. I would rather take a small chance of getting into an accident, over the 100% chance of running down an innocent animal.......

Dad, LOOK OUT I shouted. It was a bold statement coming from the mouth of a seven year old siting in the shotgun seat. He did not swerve or slam on the brakes. I watched in horror as a string of green eyes went under the family station wagon and heard the thump of the raccoon family perish on Highway 14.
*
It was a foggy June night in the early 1960's. I am sure the tears were flowing when I asked why didn't you try to miss? He said I really feel bad about what just happened. But anything I could have done to avoid those little animals would have put you, your mother and baby sister at risk. Son, you have choices and human life, especially your family's safety is the most precious decision you will ever face.
*
Fortunately, I have never faced that choice. But if given the circumstances, human life prevails.

hannah has trouble seeing the big picture a lot of times. Next she will want to know what color the animal was.

when i went through the 15 passenger van driving course we were taught that its better to hit the animal then to try and avoid it. the less you have to turn the wheel the better your chances are of keeping those things on their wheels.

I guess I'm more upset that the driver swerved to miss hitting an animal which resulted in 2 life threatening injuries, a death and damage to a vehicle state taxpayers pay for than what he is in prison for or whether his family disowned him. Totally senseless......

does it truly matter what he was in for? A person died in an accident, and I hope you are not going to say something stupid like "If it ws this crime or that crime then thats fine he is dead."
