New nonprofit addresses climate change
MADISON — A new nonprofit organization in Wisconsin has been created to fight global warming.
Gov. Jim Doyle says the Wisconsin Climate Change Action Initiative will bring together leaders in business, government, advocacy organization and researchers to work on the issue.
Forming a nonprofit group like this was recommended by a Doyle task force that studied global warming.
Doyle says the group will work to increase voluntary conservancy practices that will save money and have a positive impact on the environment.
The group will focus on providing education, practical advice and expertise to residents, communities and businesses.
Initial funding for the group will come from a $5 million contribution from We Energies, Madison Gas & Electric and WPPI Energy.

No, my comment on the pot house that burned was a movie quote, that's all. I am a conservationist and environmental scientist. I don't belive this means I am far right; it means I am pro-resource protection and against the waste of resources. I am a tree hugger, but I am also an informed citizen. Do you vote?

Greenvgina8, here is a great example. You talk about air pollution, but you must have an exemption for pot houses that burn. Your comments on "Suspected pot house burns" story show how far right you are. Put on your hemp-sandals and walk away from the public library computer.

whoanellie: my background in science, specifially natural resource preservation, leads me to believe humans impact the earth every day. How much coal did it take to power our computers today? How is this not affecting the earth? What about the sporatic fires on the Cuyahoga River, from 1936 to 1969? Are they a figment of my imagination? Lake Erie was a dead zone for decades because of human induced pollution. How about this most recent flooding? An act of nature thrust upon man, with horrific consequences for both. Everything that was suspended in the water had to flow somewhere...When was the last time you ate something that was organic, or even locally grown? We impact the earth every day. How we chose to repond to that is an individual choice. I chose to elect people into positions of power who agree with my ideals about the environment. Other people like me vote, too. Green jobs will be the norm in less than 5 years. Will you still be employed or will your employer close down because it cannot meet the new standards for environmental protection?

gina: I could say there are as many real scientists out there who also disagree with it. the impact of man is not proven or disproven yet it is just some peoples assumption.(and we all know what assuming does!) I know many who do disagree with the consensus. and also where do you think this money from this nonprofit group is going to ultimatly come from??? Who gets their energy from these businesses?? WE DO!!! They will sit around in their offices and laugh all the way to the bank! It said initial funding would come from these groups and where do they get their money???? US!!!!! Wake up this is a bunch of hooey!! I think we should do all we can to take care of what God gave us, but don't mandate stupid stuff on a guess!!

"since...is speaking what the accepted consensus is,"

That is Al Gore speak for, you should believe it because we do.
Accepted consensus by whom, those that agree with it, or those that will profit from it?
As there clearly is no consensus; many people do disagree with the theories, try debating the facts.

CAN YOU SAY HIGH VOLT TRANSMISSION? Huge coin here! Having Doyle working on climate change subject –scary! Governor’s office has yet been able to prove they make sense when it comes to correlating energy against being responsible for air, water or land. Having $5 Million coming from UTILITIES makes us wonder what "hand picked" energy TWITS Doyle will select to push "heavy handed" public relations through via WISCONSIN Climate Change Action Initiative. LAUGHABLE. Like wolf buying the key to the hen house!! Try CAPX2020.
Have gut feeling this will be as silly as the "pro utility" Midwest Governors Association.
Many of us are pro-wind and solar - wanting clean energy economy for all. But the way utilities stand around trough with governor and WI PUC reminds me of thugs hanging around a mafia "drop bar" in Chicago. Nasty and they're loosing credibility by the day. We are not-Doyle-as stupid as we all look! Oh- look what the cat dragged in:

oldtimer, since greengina8 is speaking what the accepted consensus is, the shoe is really on your foot to put forth referreed science that demonstrates something different. Face the fact that you are in the minority and this debate, in the world of science, is over. You're simply trying to politically delay what you don't want to believe.

greengina8, When was the ice age 10-12 million years ago? Then it started to melt and formed our rivers, streams, lakes etc. there was no carbon footprint of man then, and I am sick of your referrring to Scientist without giving any names, references to journals etc, you just say 3500 scientitst, bloney, if you want to do something useful stop filling up the earth with plastic, etc. My science teacher told us in 1942 (Mr Rood MHS) that if we could all live long enough we would see the northern hemispere become the southern hemispere and visa versa, why? because the earth is slowly tipping on it axis. If we didnt have global warming we would still be in the ice age.

15yearsthere-not responsible for, but contributing to at an alarming rate. And yes, I agree that having energy companies fund this is a tad suspicious. We all should be worried about this point.
Global warming and cooling is cyclic, and right now- we are between ice ages when times are warmer. When this time is compared to other inter-stitial times, since the human population explosion that began in the 1800's, we are currently warmer than all other inter-stitial times. When glaciers melt, they deposit their contents into the ocean and the fresh water chemistry changes the salt water chemistry. The ocean is one of the main climate drivers on earth. The change in water chemistry leads to a reduction in the drivers of the ocean currents that greatly influence global temperatures.

If the accepted theory taught in schools right now is that man is responsible for global warming (or climate change)can someone explain to me why there was global cooling and warming prior to the industrial revolution?
-
A cleaner environment=great, i'm all for it
-
A cleaner environment forced upon us through higher taxes from the Cap and Trade Bill=not so great
-
Energy companies giving funding to a new nonprofit organization in Wisconsin that has been created to fight global warming= a tad suspicious

"There is scientific consensus on global warming"
Yes, there is a consensus that we have had a number of warmest years on record in the past decade. The two points that there are certainly not a consensus on are: 1. The role that man played in this 2. That the warming is ongoing (which is part of the reason that those with an agenda have now changed the terms of the debate to "Climate Change")

How did the glaciers form, cover most of Wisconsin and then melt? What role did man play in that era of "Climate Change"?

There is scientific consensus on global warming. It's only a few cranks who make it seem otherwise, but we really should be able to safely ignore them.
.
I'm skeptical of energy-industry-funded "conservation" groups. There may be good intentions, but part of the goal is probably to provide political cover as companies continue to burn fossil fuels and fail to exploit renewable resources. Still, as my physics professor was fond of pointing out, the largest source of new energy in the future is going to be conservation. And unfortunately, that has to take place at the level of the individual consumer as much as centralized producers, and to make that happen requires education.

And BTW-I agree with greengina8. Facts that support global warming science are easy to find. It would seem her only agenda is to help educate others about environmental issues. Read some of her other posts.

Non-profit organizations generally don't receive a paycheck; they rely on donations to fund their programs. I would hope this committee would be appointed by the Conservation Congress and not the Governor.

It is very urgent. You don't have to agree with me or any other scientists who know it's happening; we will help you because we do this for all humanity, not only ourselves.
The professors in the UW system and science teachers at all levels are teaching the most current acceptable science right now to your sons and daughters; they will make the choices you cannot, and that's OK.
The source for my facts? All scientific text books, research articles, and scientific journals I've read as part of my education from UW-Rock County and UW Whitewater. The USGS has a great website- you should check it out. I know humans impact our earth. You don't have to go far to get facts on this; check your local library and not Wikipedia, as it is not accepted for scholarly citation in most colleges statewide.

greengina8, you are perpetuating the myth. If you are going to state that you have "facts", provide the source of the "facts". No one should just take someones word for it. Facts from what source? What agenda? Agreed upon with some scientific standard? Global warming has not been proven, even thoug some agree with the concept. Most of us will not disagree with the issue that we should continue to improve our air, water and reduce consumption of natural resources. But, don't attempt the "Urgent Crisis" mode of global warming.

Sarcasm defeats the purpose of this idea. Without innovative actions like these, people will never understand the seriousness of this issue. Most are ill-informed at best and think it's a hoax. I know there are non-believers out there, and I don't profess to know everything. In my opinion and based on facts I learned in school, I believe global warming to be a real situation that is naturally occuring now and also at an accelerated rate because of human influences. It is a runaway experiment with our ecosystems and atmosphere that we need to get a hold on before we can no longer live comfortably on this, our only planet. We need more people to put their expertise to work to help find ways that work for everyone to help reduce our impacts; even those who don't believe this to be real, because by saving our butts we save theirs, too.
