MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Penalties for solicitors who call people on Wisconsin's no-call list would increase under a bill scheduled for a hearing Wednesday.

The bill would increase penalties from the current $100 to between $1,000 and $10,000. The proposal by state Sen. Jon Erpenbach, a Democrat from Waunakee, would also allow a person who suffers damages to sue.

The state's no-call list became effective in 2003 and cell phones were added in 2008. The list is free and those who sign up remain on it for two years.

About 1.7 million people have signed up for the list, which includes about 668,000 cell phones. Since the start of the list, the state agency the oversees compliance says it has taken enforcement action against 48 violators.

How about change it from a no call list, to a call list. If people want to take telemarketer calls, then they should have to put their name on a list. Otherwise, you are on a no call list.

WOW! that is all we need is another law that won't be enforced but it will be the law that state Sen. Jon Erpenbach, a Democrat from Waunakee will have under is belt so for future dealings and reelection he will be known for that terrific law for the no call list. These politicians laws are getting old quick and getting to be a JOKE!

Make sure your number is on both the state and federal no call lists.

there is a "deadline" to be put on the no-call list - the list is updated every 3 months - it may take some time before every company has the new list - if you have prior relationships with a company (like ordered something, past credit cards, etc) they can call - if the company is non-profit (or something like that - like red cross etc) they are excempt from the do-not-call list - these are what i remember

I don't understand, I put my number on the no-call list a few months ago, and I swear ever since, I receive calls atleast 5 times a day. I didn't realize they can be fined, very interesting!

Does raising penalties really matter? We're on the "no-call" list and, in recent years, have reported solicitation calls by 3 major national businesses, three times. In each case, the company simply writes back to the state agency that they made no such call and it appears the case is closed. If they can squirm out of their violations so easily, will raising penalties actually make any difference? Individuals rights rarely trump institutional bad behavior.
