One person transported for medical treatment after a crash on Highway 51 south of the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport, just south of Janesville.

The crash happened at about 7:57 p.m. A northbound Pontiac Grand Am was speeding and crossed the centerline while the driver and a passenger argued, another passenger told Sgt. Ken Marquardt of the Rock County Sheriff’s Office. The car crashed head-on into a southbound BMW.

The BMW then ricocheted off a semitrailer truck, Marquardt said. Debris from the semi struck an ice cream truck.

The driver of the BMW suffered a neck and head injury and was transported to Mercy Hospital, Marquardt said. Sandra D. Williams, 36, of Arena and an 11-year-old passenger in her car were treated and released.

The driver and a passenger of the Grand Am fled on foot and were still at large Thursday night, Marquardt said. Deputies found beer cans in the car and believe alcohol was involved in the crash, he said.

A portion of Highway 51 was closed for two hours as authorities cleaned up the mess, he said.

Does anyone know if they ever caught the two that ran?

Perhaps, then I suggest that the police be allowed to untilize the paper's site to post names of anyone who is 'of interest'. That will remove ambiguity, without infringing on the 'innocent'. This is needed, I feel, because this person was almost immediately 'on the run', and a reader may be able to help police find him quicker. But point taken.

truecitizen: If the scanner info you posted were to be incorrect (and I am not saying it was), your comment would leave the Gazette open to a slander lawsuit.

Facebooker, you need explain what you are saying. I am not sure what your point was. Sarahb1...I don't care, because this posting is not a precise science and is not a court room either. These idiots want to drive around drunk, they are subject to whatever the public has access to. I gave no indication other than information which might lead police to him, through people who might know him.

For the people injured in that crash, I feel sorry for you having to go through that. All so that this guy and his passengers (all of which I know to be worthless, but I won't mention for fear of reprisal from the Gazette), could go out, drink too much and argue while driving at highway speeds-causing an accident.

Most newspapers do not consider scanner talk to be a reliable source.

considering the fact that you can listen to the scanner online I find it odd that it would matter if the name was listed too.

Didn't JimmyBoy sell the settlement money?? Or not? Seems like I remember hearing something about that a couple of years ago.

It seems they were trying to add a tax that would amount to 5 or 10 cents to a six-pack. I don't get why they didn't. Oh, yeah, I get it. Too many drinkers in the rotunda. Like those pennies are going to really shake someone's wallet up.

I figured the Gazette would remove my post, after I put the name of the driver in there. I find that interesting, since it was on the scanner.

It seems that 90% of the comments posted on this site are from the same 12 sheep bleeting about the same 6 issues. Why don't ewe (sorry, couldn't help myself) take a few days off, find an open barn door and shut the flock up.

Speaking of diverting funds (my last post), here's an article how the money we've been charged on our cell phone bills to help pay for 911 service was diverted to help balance the budget.

SarahB1 - Good luck with that. Where's the tobacco settlement money that was supposed to help with medical costs? Do cigarette taxes go to helping addicted smokers, or does most of the money go elsewhere? I know it goes elsewhere.

beeferer, you keep saying that urban legend, but it is not true now -- if it ever was. Neither El Salvador nor Bulgaria has a death penalty anymore.

Increasing the tax on alcohol could help provide needed monies to help finance treatment for those abusing or being dependent on alcohol.

In some countries, drinking and driving is punishable by death. A first time offense in El Salvador leads to execution by firing squad, while a second offense in Bulgaria also leads to execution. Makes sense to me. I am all for it here in the good old U.S.A. Not only would lives be spared, but insurance rates would fall too.

The best part is that becasue they fled the scene - they probably won't get a DUI. Did you know in wisconsin the penalty for fleeing is less severe than drunken driving (and we all know how severe that is)?
+
So if you've been drinking and your in an accident - why stay around - if you're going to get in trouble why not take the lesser of two evils.

Talk about messed up...

In response to mentor397s comments, the state does keep most of the around three dollar a pack tax for revenue purposes(road repair etc.)and the laws and penalties in place now seem to be working fine don't they with people having multiple drunk driving charges against them(sometimes 5 or more) and killing or injuring innocent drivers.

The 61 cent tax per pack the the fed govt put on cigarettes recently was for childrens health care, what about the smokers with no children? Its nothing more than a sin tax for all that smoke. It should be the same for alcohol, a straight across the board tax might decrease the amount purchased and maybe encourage some to quit all together like the idea behind the cigarette taxes.

You can't change peoples morals. You could have the largest tax, stiffest fines, and people who will break the law will do it regardless.

Why is it that the innocent are the most hurt? These people will be caught and I hope punished to the max. When will Wi. get real on the drunk driving issue? As for taxing "spirits",How would that help, only punish the responsible drinkers?

Not all those who drink, drive. Why punish everyone for the mistakes of the few? Should we then tax fast-food because some people abuse it and get sick? Following that logic we could tax sports equipment because there are plenty of injuries there, and cars themselves for the same reason... Or maybe, we should keep our taxes for revenue purposes instead and let the laws and penalties for criminal behavior apply instead.

I think its time that the alcohol buyers start being taxed like the smokers are. Seems to me that might cut down on this sort of thing if they were hit as hard as the smokers are being taxed (harder would even be better).

Of course, the innocent guy gets the head injuries and the people at fault have the ability to run away. We're letting the wrong people survive these things...
