Report: Childress says Favre not coming back
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Vikings coach Brad Childress says Brett Favre won’t come out retirement to play for Minnesota.
Childress confirmed to The Associated Press in a text message on Tuesday that the three-time MVP quarterback for the Green Bay Packers would not join his team.
The story was first reported by The Star Tribune on its Web site.
Childress told the paper Favre did not want to put himself through the grind of another football season. Favre came out of retirement last year to play for the New York Jets. He retired again after the 2008 season and had surgery in May to alleviate a torn biceps tendon.

He started this "will I, or won't I" the year prior to his last year at Green Bay. He repeated called "press conferences" on the golf courses he was playing on. The press, of course, being the press, showed up in droves hoping he had made a decision. Of course not. He kept calling press conferences one after the other only to say "don't know". That isn't my definition of a professional or gentleman, athlete or not.

So, who's been courting the press?

jvldss: Not to digest this down to tiny sound bites, but did it ever occur to you that Favre made the statement about continuing to work out in response to a question? If he were to answer "No, I won't be working out anymore" and did continue to work with the high school kids then the media would start a whole new blitz of "Maybe Brett is going to play afterall ..." Give the guy a break.

Scorned Packer fan perhaps.
I used to really admire the guy and certainly will always respect all of his accomplishments, but I just grew tired of his drama. Who is looking through rose colored glasses if you believe he is not playing the media at all. Favre knows reporters are like rabid dogs and, IMO, he gets off on toying with those imbeciles. In fact, I used to get a kick out of the way he did it. Even in announcing his retirement yesterday he had to keep the media morons speculating by saying that he would continue throwing and working out. I think that is a bit flaky, self-centered and driven by ego as much as indecision. I know the Favre fans and apologists will always argue this point which is fine with me. I just hope at some point we can start reading about the packers and not a QB who has not played for them in well over a year.

jvldss - For someone who thinks Favre is a "flaky, self-centered, egomanic," you sure do spend a lot of time posting on the Gazette blogs about him. You sound like a scorned woman.

Oh so HE plays the media. Funny. I thought it was the media chasing after him to find out what his next move is gonna be. Huh. Ya learn somethin' new every day on the Gazette blog.

Yeah. I bet everyone on this blog bashing Favre has never had a problem making a decision about their future. This isn't as simple as deciding what color shirt to wear. This is a little bit bigger than that.

Favre is a flaky, self-centered, egomanic who loves playing the the media like the Pied Piper. Of course he was one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game but, like his interceptions and horrible playoff performances, you have to take the bad with the good.
And 12dreams - that was classic!

Sarah - I'd have more respect for him if he would make a sincere decision and stick with it. He has people bashing him because of his inept ability to make a rational and, once again, sincere, decision. I'm like alot of the people - I'm tired of the drama. To me, that's a sign immaturity and a huge case of egomania. IMO

PS-I used to have alot of respect for him and stood by him for years even when he wasn't playing at full potential.

How many of these people blasting Favre will one day (after Thompson has been dumped) stand and cheer when he is placed in the Packer Hall of Fame and brag to the next generation about how "I was there when Brett ..."?! Hypocrites.

Way to go Brett!
Leaving the hated division rival Viking bride at the alter and shattering the dreams of the Viking faithful for a marriage made in Superbowl heaven is absolutely golden. If Minnesota didn’t dislike Favre after 16 years as a divisional rival, I imagine they really hate him now. And i imagine the coaches will be doing quite a bit of spin doctoring in the opening days of training camp rather than practicing after several key Viking players threw T-Jack and Sage under the bus by trying to woo the indecisive Savior with texts and e-mails. I can hear Childress addressing the team already “ Well, T-jack and Sage, we didn’t really want that broken down milk truck anyway.” Yeah, right. Once a Packer, always a Packer. Thank you Brett.
Sincerely,
Ted Thompson
