Board OKs stimulus cash
The Janesville School Board raised a critical eyebrow at a gift from the federal government Tuesday night.
Ultimately, the board voted 7-0 to accept about $2.4 million in federal stimulus funding, much of which will be used to improve education for students with disabilities.
About $900,000 of that sum could be used to plug holes in the district’s budget for the current year or for 2010-11, under the spending plan the board approved.

JohnDoe: You didn't get the full AP story there. The numbers are broken down according to hours per job. For example, a part-time job broke down to 0.5 job and an even shorter job was tallied as a 0.25 job. Right now, there are a lot of people who would be glad to get even a 0.25 job.

"Being anti-stimulus means being pro-unemployment, I hope you folks understand."

"FROM THE Associated Press comes more evidence — as if we really needed any — that the so-called federal stimulus effort is, well, a dud.
The AP analysis found the states are fudging the figures for job creation, which is pretty easy to do because there is no standard across the country for measuring what is, or is not, a job.
Example: The state of Oregon claims 3,236 new jobs have been created because of stimulus money, including state money thrown into the effort to bolster the federal dollars. A closer look by the AP shows the jobs lasted only an average of 35 hours — less than one week of employment. Using accepted methods of accounting, the AP determined the stimulus in Oregon actually delivered the equivalent of 215 full-time jobs for three months.
Yippee!"

The Janesville School Board is full of the most greediest people I've seen. This money was earmarked for Special Education, not for 'filling holes' in the budget (Real use: Filling the pockets of those who already have too much $$)
Remember one thing, Oh School Board Members; You are VOTED in, you can be VOTED out!

This might be off topic but does anyone else have a problem with the money for clunkers being offered on foreign cars? I thought the idea of the stimulus was to help Americans keep working.

taxed2much - I don't think stimulus funds can be invested - funds need to be used for a specific purpose and if they are not, they will take the money away from our district and give to another school district...

I am not in favor of the "stimulus" money at all. This whole thing is a joke, however I would rather see money go to education as opposed to re-paving or building a bike path or building a stupid bike tunnel.
However what the board needs to do now, is place those funds in a savings account. at 2% int. it can earn 48K per year and that could pay for a spec. ed teacher. THEN have the VOTERS decide how the $$ should be spent if even spent at all. My vote is sock it away and when we need new AC or expansion it is there, or use it to develop a new program. DONT use it to fill holes now since what do you do next year?

I'm glad to see that Janesville schools won't need to cut educational services provided to our youth. Good news!

What they've done is accept money from the Fed that wasn't there's to give. We should be able to support ourselves. Wisconsin is not a welfare state, it's a donor state and I like that. Janesville shouldn't be a welfare city, either. We can pay our own way thank you very much.

The money will be used for bonuses and pay raises as well as more teachers to help the already lazy ones, and special education students will get bread and water like they always do!

What strings are attached to this money? Nothing, especially from the federal government, is free.
