It's wheels-up for the Janesville Jets, the newest member of the Junior A North American Hockey League.

The expansion team unveiled its new nickname and logo Friday morning at the Janesville Ice Skating Center, the home ice for a team set to make its regular-season debut on Saturday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, September 13 with a home series against the Traverse City (Mich.) North Stars.

"The team is ready for takeoff," said John McCally, the team’s general manager. "We're excited to be the Jets."

"We stuck with a classic name," said Bill McCoshen, team president and managing general partner of Wisconsin Hockey Partners.

The team received more than 200 possible nickname submissions during the first phase of the naming contest.

Janesville Jets?? How is that original, see CoHL circa 1981. It will be interesting how this team does. Janesville is not typically a hockey town and they have an older facility. If the Caps and Fighting Saints couldn't make it, I give this team about 2-3 years before they move. Then the city will be stuck with the bill for the facility!

I seem to remember a hockey team by that name which played here in the early 1980s. Anyone else?

Janesville Jets? Ties to Janesville? Oh I get it, Its because shortly all the families that have lost their jobs will be leaving Janesville (like A Jet), hoping to escape to another community that will understand our economic times that won't spend spend spend tax dollars, that we no longer have! Groceries for the family, nope can't afford them this week gotta save for more taxes! Luxuries are fine when economic times can support them, I hope the games will be free to go to, as we the tax payers will now own the Ice Arena and won't be able to pay for both.

Whydoyouask,

Tony DiNicola designed the Jets' logo on his own time.

He designed several earlier logos on our time to accompany a feature story by sports reporter John McPoland, who was having fun with the topic and suggested names for the new team. None of those was picked.

The Gazette has no financial or other interest in Tony's logo or the Jets, and we will cover the team and any news it creates objectively.

J-E-T-S JETS, JETS, JETS!!!!!! Can't wait for the season to get here so negativity from others can troll somewhere else. Hockey is alive and ready for takeoff. Don't like it?Find something you like and promote it, because the Jets are a part of Janesville, like it or not. :)

I really can't believe all the negativity. Most of you people won't even give this a chance, just because you don't like hockey you automatically say it is going to fail. The whole city of Janesville is going to fail with attitudes like these.

whydoyouask: I didn't see the article you refer to, but since you acknowledge that the DiNicola logo was among "several others", I suspect they were part of a news release to the Gazette for those in the running. Would your line of thinking then mean that the Gazette had something to do with all of them, since they published them in an article?

ChsMkr: Heed your own advice. The logo in question, along with several others, was featured in a Gazette sports story a few months back. Want to further your argument that this is a freelance job?

Whydoyou .. . Why don't you think before spouting off? I'm sure that the logo wasn't designed on company time. Have you ever heard of artists doing freelance? Anybody could've done it including you or I. It by no means constitutes a connection and your wild assumption is very unfounded.

From the official press release:
"The Janesville Jets logo was designed as part of a collaborative effort. The initial design was conceptualized by Tony DiNicola, a Janesville Gazette designer, and then graphically edited by Christy Kapellen, a senior graphic designer at Print Max in Milton."

So, in other words, the Gazette now has some sort of ties, financial or otherwise, to this team. That makes it hard to objectively cover the team's actions, both on and off the ice, doesn't it? What if, for example, the team defaults on a payment to the city for use of the ice arena, or if the team's general manager gets caught in a compromising situation, and team officials want to keep it out of the paper?

Not exactly the position I'd want to be in, Angus & Co.

And the sign for the J-Hawks has been outside the rink for more than a year, certainly not new!

My vote was for the "Janesville Jokers".

These "Jets" will never take off in this city. Not enough interest or fan support. Will be more of a black hole than it already is!

I wonder if the city will conduct underage buying stings at the beer stand, or if the Ice Arena will be off-limits for such testing?

OK, the alliteration is cute, but it's too bad that there's no connection between Jets and Janesville. I suppose it suits our lack of identity (no longer a "GM town") now.

this jet is destined to crash land on an expensive icy runway! paid for by the taxpayers, most of who wish not to have it land in their neighborhood.
