Water advisory issued for Lions Beach

A water quality advisory has been issued for Lions Beach, 1401 Palmer Drive, Janesville.

The advisory is the result of a higher than normal count of E. coli bacteria.

“Water Quality Advisory” signs have been posted at the beach, advising beach-goers to swim at their own risk. Swimmers are also advised to take precautions such as not drinking pond water, showering after swimming, hand washing before eating—which is a good idea at any time—and not swimming if they are sick.

Water tests will be conducted on a regular basis.

The water advisory will be lifted when water quality improves.

Certain types of E. coli can cause intestinal problems such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Common causes for high E. coli levels are heavy rains and droppings from waterfowl.

Lions Beach has been closed in the past because of E. coli levels.

In 2008, widespread flooding added to the E. coli problems.

In 2007, Lions Beach was also closed because of bacteria levels.

I STILL saw people letting their little children splash in the water at Lion's Beach today. Sheesh, some never learn.

E. coli is from fecal matter, not GM or the 4th Ward.

If they raked the beach every day into furrows, the sun would kill the e coli that is present from the goose poop. Trying to get rid of the geese is more costly than raking the beach every day during the summer. The City of Racine does it and it works with amazing success. They used to have a beach closure rate of about 75% or greater during peak season. Now, they are closed less than 5% of the time.

I swam there last week (in a wetsuit) and I thought it was as nice as I've seen it, the water is clear and seemed fine to me. I swam there as a kid and I train there as an adult; somehow I've lived to tell the tale ;-)
Yes there was a bit of goose poop in a few places on the sand (what beach DOESN'T have a bit of wildlife??). If you watch your step, it's not a problem.

The beach was actually 'the' summer place to hang out back in the late 70's. There were tons of people, the water was clean and the bottom was sandy. They had decent shower facilities and a concession stand. I remember some weekends it was hard to find a place to park your towel and cooler because of the crowd. Drive by now and take a look at it. It's golden years are long gone, unfortunately. This article just adds to the 'nasty' of it all.

I think the run off was from the GM

Was this caused by runoff from the forth ward?

Why would people even go in the water at this point? How often does the water get tested? Are we wasting tax money to keep the beach open, when any hard rain seems to increase bacteria levels?

The beach used to be so fun... when the beach was cleaner! Now the sand is full of bird dookie and sticks and sharp things. I won't go barefoot there after finding bottle caps, broken glass and on a few occasions used hypodermic needles in the sand.

Maybe the city should go down there at night, when the ducks & geese are sleeping and shoot them. This protecting these D & G,is getting out of hand. DNR should get involved, they think they know how to control the deer population. There are too many of these birds in this town & the parks are like walking in a barn yard.

I don't know why everyone thinks this is such a big deal. Just drink the water a few times, you'll get used to it. Besides, it's a pretty good diet plan if you ask me.

This happens every single year. I wouldn't go there even if there wasn't a warning. My mom said when she was younger in the seventies it was a blast there.

Have you seen the dirtbags swimming there lately? You would be lucky to only be swimming in poo.

The city has really let lions beach go. It could bring a lot of summer visitors to the city as there are so few beaches in the area. No enforcement of the laws against feeding waterfowl hasn't helped either. Next time you see someone feeding the geese and ducks thank them for those warning signs against swimming.

It's pretty sad how Lions Beach has degraded over the years. I remember some of the best summers swimming there in nice clean sandy bottom waters in the late 70's - early 80's.

I went there a couple of years ago and it was disgusting. There were also some freaky looking black hornet type bugs that were flying everywhere. Daughter is allergic to hornets so we didn't stay. I won't go back. The poo is everywhere.
