National Weather Service officials are still investigating a tornado reported near the town of Milton on Tuesday.

Officials from the service’s Sullivan office are scheduled to visit the area around 9 a.m. today.

A thunderstorm developed quickly around 7:50 p.m. over Edgerton. An airline pilot reported the storm produced a funnel cloud about 3 miles southeast of the city, according to the service.

Members of the public reported a tornado on the ground near Clear Lake Road by 8:10 p.m.

A Rock County dispatcher said the storm did cause some minor damage to trees and power lines, but no homes or vehicles were reported damaged on Tuesday night.

Two vehicle accidents were reported in the area, but no indication was given that they were connected to the storm, the dispatcher said.

I was in at Blackhawk campgrounds during the storm. I was over on the North east side of Mud lake, the winds pick up and debris started whipping. I got back to my place and the wind was very strong, so bad at the time I couldn't get out of my golf cart. After it let up, I got inside, then WJVL was giving the report of the funnel cloud. The rain & wind picked up again, yet not as bad. When it was all done, I went to see if there was any damage on the grounds, a lot of branches, stuff blown over, the worst was a park model on the south side of the lake that had a metal awning ripped off and flew over the top, No injuries.

brewersfan - yes, I have an extensive background in atmospheric science. truth - I wonder why no one has pictures as well. With all the people on the lake and on the river you would think someone would have a camera with them. It makes me question the tornado reports, but there's still a chance something happened.

hey mrscott im just wondering if your an atmospheric science major or in the process of completing your degree i am majoring in the same field....and i agree moreso with your theory of a landspout just because of the conditions at the time were not favorable for supercells to form

Interesting situation with the possible tornado last tonight. Though the atmosphere wasn't anywhere near primed for mesocyclone or supercell (rotating) induced tornadoes, I peeked back at mesoanalysis observations from last evening and it appears that the possible tornado near Milton may have been a non-supercell tornado (if a tornado occurred at all), i.e. a landspout. Landspouts are different than supercell tornadoes because they are not produced by rotating thunderstorms but rather existing surface vorticity along a boundary which is then "stretched" into the storm. Around 8pm, the 0-3 km CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) was roughly 75 j/kg in S/SE Wisconsin with a weak sfc boudary stretching across Rock County. 0-3 km AOA 75 j/kg is conducive for tornadoes in supercell thunderstorms, but can also be conducive for non-supercell tornadoes in situations with existing surface vorticity. In a nutshell - there's a chance the tornado reports near Milton were legitimate, but was likely not caused by a supercell thunderstorm.
