Group looks to help laid-off workers
The recession has been hard on all of Rock County. Thousands have been laid off from General Motors, Lear and other auto suppliers, with more layoffs coming from other struggling industries. Those in turn have hurt local businesses, starting a chain reaction.
The members of CORD—Collaborative Organizations Responding to Dislocation—know how widespread the problem is. The group is working to get a handle on what unemployed workers need and how it can help fill in the gaps.
The collaboration started as a workshop for representatives of local organizations such as charities, technical colleges and the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board.
But they soon decided to keep working together, looking for ways to create new programs, attract grants and reach out to workers, said Sue Conley, executive director of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin.
The organization knows its task is a broad one. At a recent meeting, members discussed needs from child care to transportation to financial counseling.

This is going to get much worse before it gets better, ask me about the depression of the 30's. There was very little help available. I was born in 1923 so that makes me an expert.

The reality is that people need help keeping their homes! The waiting list for any housing help is YEARS long and those that don't own their home have NO relief.
Healthcare is provided, daycare services are available to those with all adults working in the house. Food pantries are all around and open their doors all the time. Energy assistance is available to apply for. The only gaps are Rent/Mortgage and Water bills. Everything else is non-essential!
Just my opinion of course...

beef and Tommy...be realistic. This group can do nothing to create jobs. That's not what they're here for. Their mission is to connect the unemployed with child care services, healthcare services, tuition assistance, etc, to help bridge the gap while the unemployed seek employment.

Don't need child care, transportation or money counseling. Education or training, maybe. Jobs? Definately!
