From the WCLO newsroom:

Amid troubling economic news, a furniture store announces intentions to open a franchise in Janesville.

Gale Price, manager of building and development services for the city, says city staff members have been working with a franchisee hoping to open a Slumberland Furniture store in the former Walmart building.

Price says the city received a building permit application and plans on Tuesday. He says the new store will be approximately 30,000 square feet, using the vestibule of the former Walmart store.

He says the store has been looking at Janesville for several years, but had not found a suitable location.

Price says he's not aware of a time line for the store's opening. Given typical construction time lines, he says it should open this summer.

Hey rockstars and hannah- Zoom is right I checked it out today and Sikers and the Comfort Shoppes at both of the stores (Yup I went shopping to find out)all have Ashley products Comfort Shoppe actually had more Ashley stuff instock the guy told me than most of the Ashley Home stores so you don't have to wait, BIG plus I thought and they also have free delivery which was another plus cuz the Home store quoted me $85-$100 for delivery and I had to wait 2 to 3 weeks so buying local has its pluses I guess. I don't know how Slumberland is gonna do it but the one in Delavan charges and didn't have hardley any Ashley to see when I went there, so Sikers and The Comfort Shoppes and even found out that Crazy Joes (I think thats the name) downtown had Ashley to. So not that big of A deal, but it will be nice for A few jobs and A building that won't be empty anymore! Now if somebody would move into the old Menards that would be cool...... Good Luck to all the new businesses coming in and I hope the ones that have been around get some local help from us, no sense going out of town and paying more when you can get it here and now.

I would imagine that the economy may actually help some businesses, and certainly those that have cash on hand or an accessible credit (at incredibly low interest rates) are going to be in the best position. Keep in mind that the 14/26 area is a regional shopping district.

It's possible Slumberland got a great deal on the building, and are willing to wait out the economy for the inevitable recovery.

I agree that it'll be difficult for Slumberland to get good sales with the unemployment rate down as it is in our current economy. Hopefully, this will be the upswing for employment and income into Jville AND Rock County. I may not like being in Jville (due to money issues, I've gotta stay), but if Jville goes under financially, the entire County will be very economically depressed.

Happy news. It'll be nice to have a larger furniture retailer in Janesville to offer a larger selection.

BW3, I would imagine, would be open by the 19th, in time for the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament. But, who knows. I haven't heard any firm date, just my guess.

So glad to see a new furniture store coming here. Choices here have been very limited and it will be nice not to have to go out of town for furniture needs.

Yep, this is what we need. More stores willing to take a chance by coming into Janesville. It all helps.

More than 5 years ago a saleslady at Eastowne Slumberland told me that the company wanted to break into Janesville for a store. Kind of can't believe they're going to open now, but I do think it is great for Janesville and the eyesore of the old Walmart.

That's great, but who can afford the furniture if we don't have jobs in the first place?

Slumberland, Sikers and Comfort Shoppe, among others, sell (and can also order) Ashley furniture.
