Hockey team step closer to skating here
The Janesville City Council on Monday OK’d spending $200,000 to add locker rooms and an office to bring a junior A hockey team here.
And, Bill McCoshen, a member of Wisconsin Hockey Partners, said he and his partners would now apply for a franchise with the North American Hockey League.
The vote on Monday was four to one, with Bill Truman voting no. Voting to approve the spending were Tom McDonald, Kathy Voskuil, Russ Steeber and Yuri Rashkin. Absent were Amy Loasching and George Brunner.
The season would start in September.
The contract includes a clause that allows McCoshen to void the contract approved on Monday if the council does not approve an alcohol license so the team can sell beer.

You can vote as many times as you want. You just have to close everything and clear history, temporary internet files, temp files, reopen your browser and vote again. It's easy although it is a hassle and not really worth it.

As the great former UW Badger hockey coach Bob Johnson once said, ITS A GREAT DAY FOR HOCKEY. (Actually, I think he said that every day.) Thanks city council for standing up and giving Janesville something that separates us from other area communities, an Indoor Ice Skating Center and a brilliant future.

The problem with online polls is that you don't know who is voting ... it could be the same two or three people voting over and over again.

I really think this could be great for the city if the community supports this 100% come game time. For the whiners and complainers, (spacecase & supernegative), if you were to check out other posts of theirs you would find the same disturbing pattern alot of negativity.I dont know how they live with themselves.Must be a real miserable life they live.Well for the positive thinkers cant wait to see ya at the games.Drop the puck!

If I remember this correctly.. YOU HORRIFIC MORONS VOTED YOUR BELOVED CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS IN.. (LIVE BY YHE SWORD... DYE BY THE SWORD).. If you don't like it.. "GO TO THE FRICKEN MEETINGS AND VOICE YOUR OPINION"... "THESE ARE NOT CLOSED DOOR MEETINGS"..
As for the Snappers... they were sold/bought, Just like the Brewers were sold a few years back... and look at them now..setting attendance records 3 of 4 years in a row...So.....
Even with the 2 council members missing.. the best the (or worse ) the vote could have been would be 4-3 and there does not have to be a 2/3 vote to pass (if i am correct) .. so you would still have this passed... BTW>>> the mortgage rates are down ... SELL AND MOVE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE OUT COME...

Implying the city council members are heroin users and are as trustworthy as crackheads is so absurd that it's laughable. Good grief it is without doubt one of the most moronic comments I've seen here and that took a lot of work.

The city council is totally screwed up! The heroin abuse seems to be proliferating in areas beyond the school system. This is an excellent issue for referendum. Of course even if the vote is overwhelmingly against spending over $1 million++, the council will push it through anyway. You can't trust them any more than you can trust crackheads. With the value of houses dropping in this area, just wait and see if your property taxes go up.

It is logical that some would not want the hockey team to come to Janesville, but to compare the city to a socialist government and to imply that souls are being lost is really extreme. Conservatives acting radically (Superdave-only an arrogent person calls themselves "super") and christians acting unchristianly (Justifiedbyfaity judging others); total hypocricy.

Great News For Janesville! I bet everyone against this has never even step foot in the ice areana to see the use it gets. For teh last 16 years I have practically lived at teh ice areana and more and more I see nothing but growth. It is very sad to see everyone so negative about all of this. As far as everyone complaining about the sales of beer did everyone know that last winter there was a Junior Hockey game held here and the city allowed us to have beer sales and wow nothing ever happened everyone enjoyed the game and went home. Did anyone hear a word about drunkenness going on??? No that's what I thought! So all of you knocking this whole thing please stop you do not know the facts of what happens or who uses the rink or how many people are involved down there so until you do you should keep quiet.
I am happy the city took a step forward this will bring nothing but good to Janesville!!!!

This is great! As far as those of you still stuck on the beer sales issue. Time to get over that please. Go read some of the posts from some of the alarming citizens that think all drugs should be legalized and then tell me what we really need to worry about around here. It's certainly not someone having a beer at a hockey game.

Way to go Janesville City Council!! Finally something positive in the news today. All you negative naysayers, need to take a step back and get some perspective. If you continually say no to everything, eventually everything will say no to you. This is a truly positive step for Janesville. And for the record, not everyone in this city didn't want improvements to the hockey rink and the junior team. Only a few narrow minded folk like many of yourselves.

Many of the Beloit Snappers players are fresh out of high school - too young to legally drink - yet I don't hear anyone complaining about beer sales at Pohlman Field. Nor do I hear about scores of drunk drivers causing havoc and injury after Snappers games. This whole alcohol issue is a red herring.

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out: 1. This will cost more than what it is ever worth. 2. Most of the citizens of Janesville do not want this. 3. We have ENOUGH alcohol related problems here and to sell ALCOHOL at the rink is WRONG! I agree with the comments of TRUTHTELLER on going against what the citizens want. I would rather see the money be used to once again OPEN our health care building. We should update the building and serve our local citizens. We currently pay other counties when we send citizens to Oshkosh(mental health) and Madison(alcohol) for care. I know it is our county dollars, but why continue to spend money for services outside of Janesville when we have a building here. All this talk about bringing jobs to Janesville and we pay other counties for services that could take place here. This would returm some necessary jobs to Janesville.

the sad part is- is that this is just the start of the BS. If the council is going to go against the people on this issue you know that alcohol at these events and a new ice arena will be in the future too. Truely sad when the elected official don't do what the people want. I guess we are headed down the path of socialism. I would like to join any group out there that wants to try to get these people out of office.

Drunkards already have enough places to tank up in Janesville, we do not need another one. Is the issue about bringing in more money from alcohol sales? It may be big business but it will not go well in the end for those who peddle that poison.

The only chance of stopping this is to involve enough parents and civic and church groups who don't want the city to "sponsor" a DUI race-car team. Insist on no beer license being issued to a facility catering largely to the Under 21 crowd!
.
If they approve the sale of alcohol there, the first death caused by a drunk driver from the Ice Arena will be blood on the hands of om McDonald, Kathy Voskuil, Russ Steeber and Yuri Rashkin.

Thanks for spending money you don't have, council! Too bad the missing two members couldn't have made the meeting -- seems like it would have been one they should have attended seeing as a controversial spending issue was on the table.
Another special interest group bowed to, when this city couldn't even pitch in $35k to assist the Tallman house last budget process without that special interest group whining and twisting arms until they got what they wanted.
Hockey will go the way of the Beloit Snappers, with a handful of fanatic users, complaints about low attendance and demands for outrageous facility upgrades as well as new Zambonis, all at taxpayer expense of course. It won't draw businesses to Janesville (odd that the word "Janesville" doesn't even spell-check on the Gazette's own system -- though Evansville and Jacksonville do!).
The "ice center highly used" claim thrown about by this project's supporters is just another example in a long line of non-statistical, anecdotal smoke (and no doubt somehow closely related to the old "we don't need a swimming pool at the school" -- RIGHT NOW, that is -- ploy)!
Next thing you know the council will be back with "the sidewalk plan" (whatever that plan was -- seems long forgotten now)! And did the council forget about the SKATE PARK that they haven't yet found a way to fund -- something local skaters have been teased with for years, all the while being substantially outlawed from much of the challenging terrain features downtown? Perhaps the council would consider fielding a roller derby team -- I'd pay to see them battling it out on the oval with other local city councils and county board -- perhaps even ROLLERBALL, staged inside the GM plant! YES!
STOP SPENDING MONEY WE DON'T HAVE!!! (Hasn't anyone on the council learned this lesson yet? -- can you say "Children's Museum"? ... NOT!)
