Janesville firefighters are at the scene of a residential fire at 121 Clark St.

Firefighters were dispatched at 5:25 a.m. to the unoccupied 1 ½-story house downtown.

Upon arrival, firefighters could see flames showing in the attic.

By 5:45 a.m., firefighters were able to enter the first-floor front apartment but heavy smoke continued to come from the attic.

Janesville police are blocking traffic at the intersections of Clark Street and Parker Drive and Clark Street and Garfield Avenue, according to a department patrol supervisor.

Alliant Energy also was called to the scene.

LYNDA - I was gone for 2 nights and 3 days, and my cat was properly taken care of...food and water dishes in two rooms and one hidden just in case. So, your inquiry is irrelevant.
*
MY2CENTS - I know many people who "go out of state" and leave their kitties home alone...people work in Illinois everyday and live in Wisconsin..hehe. :) Kitty was fine.
*
KRSMITH01 - I really could care less WHO believes my story about the windows! I was there, my son was there and my husband was there, we all seen it, it happened, and whether you believe it or not doesn't matter. And no, NOT EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, but more nights than not. Also, we didn't live there very long, due to these weird things as well as the fact that there was a crack house next door that was too dangerous to live by.

HANNAH..THANK YOU!

Your asking us to believe that the wind unlocked and blew open your windows at the same time, everyday and your kitten suddenly turned from a "sweet little peanut" to a non-domesticated wild animal. . . .hmmmmmmm, . . .yep, I'm buying that story*****??????

Optimism said he/she went away for a weekend. Cats are ok if left for a couple days, as long as they have water & plenty of food and a litter box that was clean when he/she left.

Optimism: how long were you gone for and did you leave your poor little kitty alone all of that time? Your little kitty was probably really mad at you.

Hornet...I used to live in an apartment on Jackman. It also is an old house turned into apartments. I lived in an upper, and although, my sounds and funny things weren't due to faulty construction, I would have windows blow open EVERY night at dinner time - even when locked, I went away one weekend to Tenn. and upon returning my fridge had been completely turned off and everything in it was spoiled and my whole apart. stunk so bad, and my kitten who was the sweetest little peanut was so mean it was attacking everyone from the time I returned that I had to take her to a farm. Upon researching the house after moving, I found out that a family had died in a house fire way back, and that is why the fireplace in my apartment was completely cemented shut. Anyway, those old houses downtown and up on courthouse hill have some history that's for sure, and uninvited visitors...:) Stay safe to all, and thank GOD this house was unoccupied.

In the 70's, I lived at 114 Clark St. At that time, the big, ol' house (turned into 4 apts) was so riddled with false walls and ceilings. I remember one night I awoke with a frightfully loud crash. I got up and found nothing had fallen and went back to bed. Later that afternoon, I happened to see white dust on the loveseat. I looked up to see the false/dropped ceiling tile (2'x4') sagging, ready to fall. The plaster ceiling had become damp from the upstairs unit and eventually fell.
In those days, we had a Janesville fireman living across the street. I hope all fighting the fire are safe, and those who live around it.
