JANESVILLE -- A former church day care director accused of embezzling about $53,000 stood mute this afternoon in Rock County Court.

Deborah L. Wright, 38, of 3204 Rose Court, Beloit, is accused of stealing the money from Faith Lutheran Church's Faith Little Friends Day Care, according to the criminal complaint.

She faces two felony charges of theft of more than $10,000 from a business and one felony charge of theft of $2,500 to $5,000 from a business.

The court entered a not guilty plea for her.

Wright is suspected of using church credit cards, debit cards, cashier’s checks and cash withdrawals to embezzle the money from January 2007 through December 2008, according to the criminal complaint.

She did hire a felon. As a cok. about a week after she left the center they were cleanign out her office. Found unpaid bills, her personal cell bills bills that were paid with the centers credit card and the paperwork hidden for when she hired her stem mom - a FELON. Check your facts, well I did......

Yes, Jansevillean, I do believe that people who committ this specific crime should do jail time. I don't see it as anything different than robbing a bank, gas station, convenience store, etc. For two years this woman systematically stole from an employer that trusted her.

What a lot of people don't know is that she put the children in the center in danger by hiding paper work. So that she could hire a felon! What she did was very wrong and she and others like her need to do jail time. If you were to rob a bank you would do time. So what is the difference between what she did and what a non violent bank robber does? She should pay the money back and serve time in jail.

This person used to "run" a daycare in Beloit many years ago (12+ maybe...), and that daycare (CCC) suddenly "was in the red" and had to close the doors....is that just a coincidence? I doubt it!!! She should serve time!! But then we just end up paying for her to be in jail...I guess hardworking families will be screwed either way!

JCK, you really think jail time is appropriate for a non-violent first-offender? Jail is not the only tool in the toolbox.

What's wrong is wrong good times or bad...I agree completely

Here's an article that indicates she used the money for mortgage payments, vacation club dues, rental cars and hotels.

It's unfortunate that people who committ this type of crime rarely do serious jail time.

What is it with these women? (Wright, Quinn and lets not forget Kay Hansen) It just disgusts me that these women think they are so much better than the rest of the world. Some of them STILL THINK they are. Too bad we know better. Of course, I am sure someone enjoyed the undeserved luxuries, as did Kay's daughter!

My grandson went to this day care and this woman was very rude, she thought she knew everything and maybe she did as she did steal. I never liked her, I hope she goes to jail and has to pay back every cent with interest. They say what goes around comes around I am glad she got hers. I wonder when my daughter said she thought she was getting double billed that maybe she was. I told her to double check but Deb, but she called my daughter a liar and irresponsible parent I wonder now.

Gladidiot and Superdork, are you done wowing us with your little slap fight? You are making SarahB's comments look good. It doesn't matter what the situation is, Deb Wright is a thief. Oh, and in case you missed it, she STOLE FROM A CHURCH AND ITS DARE CARE. And I love the "not guilty" plea. Maybe she's retarded and didn't understand what she was doing. Those of us who know her wouldn't argue with that one.

Gladiatorfootball12: First you said "you'll never truly understand my defense". Then you say "Never in any of the post did I try to justify her actions". So you no longer defend her. No need to attack me, we finally agree! If she did what the article says she did, there is no defense. I don't care if she donated the money to Mother Theresa. Wrong is wrong.
Peace out.

Legally speaking - We know that standing mute indicates that she is refusing to enter a plea and will be treated as if she is saying not guilty, but are we sure of this. She might be a mime artist in training and her message is: The money that I took is extra income so please have the IRS TAX me for ALL of the money that I took. Is it possible that she will be taxed on the unreported income?

Just a terrible and selfish act. Its no wonder church membership is dwindling in America, you can't read the news for a week without coming across stories of the theives like this or the sex offenders who run many of our churches. Obviously these are the minority but this type of behavior and hypocrisy in the church is the reason I've chose to worship in the privacy of my own home. This woman is a disgrace.

We are all hurting in these harsh times but that is no excuse to steal from a church and a daycare! How can someone be a director of a daycare and know that the money she stole could benefit the education of the children! I absolutely CANNOT stand this woman! (unfortunately I know her) and I am not surprised that she did this because she is the biggest piece of white trash! I hope the court system makes an example of her because the last thing this town needs is another thief sucking us dry!

IMO, the lack of integrity by some individuals in our society is very disturbing. This story is particularly bothersome to me because it involves someone who is involved with a church but evidently thinks she can hide her actions from mankind and God. In this case, I believe “Wright” was wrong.

She is a liar and a thief because she wants to be. Don't feel sorry for her...she wasn't suffering financially...she just thought she would get away with it because she is so 'smart'.

Restitution seems unlikely. Forcing these offenders to perform community service rather than hide away doing house arrest seems like a good start to showing shame and wanting forgiveness for the crime that was committed.

You say the word "embezzlement" and think of Mindy Quinn. She did not serve time in jail rather she wore an ankle bracelet for a few months. Remember the winter of 2007-2008? Mindy was relaxing in her home free from shoveling snow or having to brave the cold temperatures! Poor thing, while we were all trudging through the snow to get to and from work & school she was busy with her crafts and petting her dog. By the way, she is living in section 8 housing which makes you wonder how she spent all the money she stole?!?! Court records show she hasn't been making her car payments either.

There will always be "some peoples desire to do anything to obtain money". But even casually alluding to the state of the economy is inappropriate. Nothing in the article suggests that Ms. Wright was desperate to feed her family, or some other similar motivation. This was just a selfish act of opportunistic theft. Wrong is wrong, good times or bad.

This crime is really one of opportunity and temptation. Non-profits, no more than businesses, should not assume trust. There are reasons for double-entry accounting and other techniques, and this is one of them.

From the earlier report, they have her "red-handed", so I assume all of this is just a formality until her sentence is determined. I would hope she does time, like Mindy Quinn did. It was the same situation and Ms. Quinn had children as well.

You would think after several women had been busted for the same crime, others would "get it"....

Some criminals are simply that stupid!!!
