Flu case identified in Janesville school
JANESVILLE -- A child who attends Janesville's Washington Elementary School has the H1N1 influenza virus, also known as swine flu. The Janesville School District made the announcement Friday morning.
The school will not be closed. The district is following federal guidance, which says that a school can remain open, but the student must stay home for seven days.
Teachers will send any student with symptoms to the school nurse, and the student will be sent home if symptoms are "noted," according to a district news release.
A letter will be sent home with to inform parents of the confirmed case and what steps to take if their child becomes ill.

smiles6, the flu virus does not survive long outside of a host. Cleaning -- even of commonly touched items such as doorknobs or stair railings -- probably would have little effect. Individuals washing their hands frequently would.
.
This is different, for example, with the Norwalk/norovirus, now recognized as a chief cause of the wrongly named "stomach flu". That's why they wipe down cruise ships when there's an infection.

Pink, the reason the classroom is not id'd is that the virus is airborne and all in the school are considered exposed, not just close contacts in the classroom. Viral illness is contagious even before a person has symptoms. Thankfully the illness is mild for most. Flu spreads. That's just the way it is.

Well, 15 years, since 36,000 (according to the CDC) die each year from the flu, yes, I think to get paranoid about this particular strain is silly.
And, if you actually read my post, I wasn't poking fun of someone who "goes beyond concern" to paranoia. But if someone does, they need therapy.

NEW YORK - A day after a swine flu outbreak shut down three public schools in New York City, officials said Friday the virus is spreading faster and more erratically than seasonal flu does, but the symptoms have generally been mild.

The CDC changed its guidelines on May 15, 2009.
http://www.cdc.gov/media/pressrel/2009/s.... In this press release the CDC no longer recommended that school be closed due to the H1N1 flu... but sick kids should be sent home, stay home, and everyone else practice good hygiene. Washing School is doing exactly what the CDC recommends at the moment.

I knew once it got to Janesville schools they wouldn't close the schools down! I called that one!
Hopefully the child is doing okay at home and no more students will get sick!

Yes Pink the CDC has decided that since H1N1 is somewhat mild it is not necessary to close schools now.

Thank you tink! I also have a child there and would especially like to know if it is in her classroom. Not all of us are blessed with a non-compromised immune system as apparently the majority here appears to be. I'm confused though why the other schools-Milton/Fort Atk were mandated closed but Washington isn't? Has there been a change in Federal protocol?

Do any of you people have a child at Washington School, probably not, and that is why it is so easy for you not to care. I have a child there, and I care. It would be nice to know what grade, class, etc...and yes I agree, leave it up to the parents if they want their child to go to school or not. This does not freak me out, it just concerns me.

Mikki, My skin is just fine thanks:) So in your opinion, is the H1N1 influenza something we should be concerned about? And if someone goes beyond concerned to paranoid, we should then poke fun at them?

Ridicule? You need thicker skin, my dear sir.

Mikki, kudos to you, that is a good idea!! Considering WI has the 2nd highest amount of confirmed H1N1 flu cases in the country (and we are not far behind IL. wich has the most). I can understand why people are concerned, i can even understand why people are not concerned. But why is this article or the facts i stated above cause for ridicule?
