Lockdown at Craig High short lived
JANESVILLE – Craig High School students and staff were in a “soft lockdown” for about five minutes around 1:30 p.m. today, Principal Mike Kuehne reported.
The school was reacting to a call from the Janesville police, who were responding to a request to check on the welfare of a man with a knife in a home in the 300 block of South Randall Avenue. Craig is at 401. S. Randall.
The incident, which was apparently not related to the school, was resolved quickly, and the school resumed business as usual, Kuehne said. In a soft lockdown, everyone is restricted to classrooms with doors locked. No one is allowed in the halls or to leave the school.
Police report detaining a man in his home and seeking a mental-health evaluation. The man told police that there was no knife.

and that's half the problem with today's society, we are always preparing for the "what if"! What if is EVERYWHERE! That's how judgement and fear is created! I would much rather my children worry about the happy things in life instead of what might happen! Especially when the might is slim to NONE!!

Wow, people. I would much rather know that the schools are protecting the students and staff by being on alert and nothing happens rather then the school not doing anything and something happens. You're really going to complain about a lockdown? Get a life.

It does not threaten schools per say but keeps everyone in place so if something more does happen students can go into a full lockdown quickly. It's simply a percaution.

Jefferson elementry was in "soft lockdown" also. I will agree that is plain stupid! Where does the two go hand in hand? Craig is almost a mile away? The staff, parents and KIDS get all freaked out for NOTHING! I had a child tell me there was a guy down the street with a gun trying to shoot someone!? This just causes uneeded fear! How does a guy trying to kill himself threaten schools?

So what is he going to do, run into the school, and cut someone? I don't think the students would have let that happen. At least not the class of '79! Oh wait. We were chillin' pretty good back then. I think. Honestly don't remember...

They use a soft lockdown if there is something happening near the school but does not pose a threat to the students. If it's an isolated incident that involves a person in their own home with the police handling the situation there is no reason for the children to get hunkered down under their desks or in a corner, scared and not learning if they do not have to. Times have changed and so have the crazy people in the world. Sometimes small crazy situations involve soft lockdowns.

What in the heck is a soft lockdown? When I worked at Edison and then Parker, there was only one kind of lockdown and that was followed whenever needed. I think any threat, no matter how small should be addressed with a full lockdown, not a "soft" lockdown. How ridiculous!!
