Twins get J.J. Hardy from Brewers
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins have acquired shortstop J.J. Hardy from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for outfielder Carlos Gomez.
The move, announced Friday, relieves a crowded outfield for the Twins, who also have Delmon Young, Denard Span and Michael Cuddyer.
The 27-year-old Hardy batted .229 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 115 games for the Brewers in 2009. A 2007 All-Star, he is just the third shortstop in Brewers’ history to hit more than 20 home runs in a season twice (Robin Yount and Jose Hernandez).
He has a career batting average of .262 with 75 home runs and 265 RBI in 571 games.
The 23-year-old Gomez was acquired by the Twins from the New York Mets last year. He batted .229 with three home runs and 28 RBI in 137 games with the Twins last season.

Wow Brewer fans are dumb. This is a fantastic deal for you guys. JJ sucks. I know everyone loved him because he played really well for the first month of the season a couple of years ago and the ladies swooned when he came to the plate. But the guy isn't very good. He's also got very little trade value. I'm surprised the Crew was able to get someone with the amount of talent Gomez has. Sure he hit .230 last year and hasn't lived up to the hype...YET. The kid is never going to be a .320 hitter but he has the potential to hit .270-.280, get on base at a good clip, and steal 50+ bases a year. He's also one of the best defensive OFs in the league.
Look, your pitching sucks. Nobody is going to trade for Bush or Suppan like someone else recommended in a post. They're worthless. But what can help bad pitching is good defense. Your team is now very solid up the middle (Escobar/Gomez) defensively. They'll let Cameron walk, freeing up a decent amount of cash to be used on a pitcher. Of course they'll sign Washburn since he's from Wisco and you guys will all automatically love him even while he goes 10-10 with a 4.25 ERA.
What your team SHOULD do is deal Fielder for a couple arms, toss Gamel over to 1B, and win with pitching, defense, smart base-running and power from guys like Braun/Hart/Weeks/Gamel. Hopefully you'll keep Prince and continue to sign re-tread SPs who won't help you win. But the fans will keep packing the stadium to see the HRs and the untucked shirts after Ws.

doug melvin and ted thompson must have went to the same gm school. Now you better spend some money on atleast 4 starting pitchers, because the Twins just got a freebie to lessen your wallet weight

If JJ was let go because of his bad, don't expect much more from Gomez. Gomez hit .230 with 3 home runs last season. He was given time to develop in the Twins organization - one of the best at bringing up young talent - and didn't develop as expected.

chell...rickie is expected to make up the power of losing cam. not the defense. the new guy gomez will play center and bat lead off. which is why we dont need to pay cam or lopez and we can FINALLY relieve rickie of the lead off duties. i also would not be surprised if mr fielder is not in a brewer uniform for spring training...just my guess but hes THE MOST VALUABLE player available to get THE MOST VALUABLE pitcher available...

JJ was a fan favorite, but he was too inconsistent. They have enough young talent they can put at SS in his place. His bat is what sent him packing...

Rickie Weeks is hot/cold...now he's comin off a season-ending injury. There are no guarantees he could replace Cameron. I'd say stick with Cam...

The Brewers need pitching and trade for an outfielder? What the heck is Mr. Moron, I mean, Melvin thinking!?!?!
I miss JJ already!

With Escobar and this Gomez at the top of the order, Rickie Weeks will be expected to pick up the power hitting load that Cameron takes with him. Doug Melvin needs the cash that would be used on Lopez for pitching thus there's very minimal chance that he'll be back.

in my opinion hardy had minimal trade value anyways. the potential of gomez is what we traded for. good bye cameron and lopez now too

The Brewer braintrust must see something in Gomez that the rest of us don't otherwise this trade looks like a steal for the Twins. I'm thinking Willie Randolph's knowledge of him when he was in New York may have a lot to do with it.
