Decker: Not enough votes to override DNR veto

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The leader of the Wisconsin state Senate says he doesn't think there's enough votes in the Legislature to override an expected veto of a bill changing who names the secretary of the Department of Natural Resources.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker of Weston made the prediction Thursday.

Gov. Jim Doyle has repeatedly said he opposes the bill. It takes the power to appoint the secretary away from him and gives it instead to the Natural Resources Board.

Doyle has not said whether he will veto the measure but it's widely expected he will.

Two-thirds of both Assembly and Senate members must approve the override to be successful. The bill passed the Assembly 49-44 earlier this month and cleared the Senate 21-11.

Representatives are elected for two year terms, elected during the fall elections.

Now, if you want to run for city council, or county board - that would be April.

bobb1951: Assembly seat elections are held in November, not April.

bobb1951: So, you are going to run for an Assembly seat in April? You may want to do some research on that one...

Not surprising. Most democrats are not going to go against Doyle even though in this case it is the right thing to do. The head of the DNR should not be a political appointee!

thepeckingorder - Doyle has spent yours, mine and everyone else's money very poorly. Other than that, he hasn't done much.

What a shame, one less taxpayer funded position that Doyle could have handed to one of his political cronies. Boy, Wisconsin is really going to miss such selfless leadership when this clown finally slithers out of office next year.
