Edgerton to discuss possible sale of veterans building
History could collide with practicality in a debate over the future of the Edgerton Veterans Memorial Center.
The building has sat mostly empty since the church that was renting it moved out last year. The city has discussed selling it in the past, and a potential buyer has expressed interest, encouraging the council to again take up the issue.
But the building is full of history for the city’s veterans, and some don’t want the city to sell.
“There obviously are some, and understandably so, very strong emotions,” said Fred Falk, senior vice commander for the local VFW chapter, Edgerton City Post 2708.
The city council discussed the issue at its Nov. 2 meeting and plans to discuss it again at a future meeting.

I am unaware of where I found this.
Often we treat people like old buildings which no longer have the glamour of fresh paint and style. Plain, faded and showing their age from many angles. Preserved and able to age with dignity and grace both man and building will tell their stories to those future people not yet born. Failing to see the uniqueness of the simple and plain negate the gifts they offer.
This basically says it all, what was once a source of pride is soon forgotten as it ages whether building or man.

"If the city is looking to do something with the Vet's building why not consider it for the new city hall?"
>>
That option was considered, and quickly discarded. Several reasons were provided but what it amounts to is that the building wouldn't have the amenities Edgerton's city leaders want, and since the taxpayers are footing the bill, why build anything but the best. After all, just because we're in tough economic times doesn't mean government should have to make sacrifices. They've always got the taxpayers to fleece when they run short on cash.

It really is a terrible idea to sell the building that helps to honor our Veterans. Never understood Edgerton. Stoughton, Milton and Janesville all have great VFW buildings that all are a gathering place for Veterans and the general public. Why not Edgerton??
We should be honored and very proud of all Veterans from the area.
Don't disgrace them by taking away one of the last memorials in town.

If the city is looking to do something with the Vet's building why not consider it for the new city hall? We could avoid spending millions on a new building when this one might work just fine. It's certainly much more stable then the old city hall; just needs some updating.
