Longtime Packers employee fired for comment

GREEN BAY — A maintenance employee who’s worked for the Green Bay Packers for more than two decades is fired after making a comment to head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Friday that 53-year-old Mike Wood was sitting in a maintenance cart in a stadium tunnel a few days before the Minnesota Vikings visited Lambeau Field.

As McCarthy talked to members of the ground crew, Wood says he yelled out to McCarthy to "get the boys ready to kick some butt this weekend."

A few days later, Wood was fired from the franchise he loves.

Wood says his supervisors thought he told McCarthy not to lay an egg, or something similar.

The Packers organization says Wood’s supervisors determined he made an inappropriate comment and he was dismissed.

McCarthy told WTMJ radio Friday he’s not in charge of the maintenance department and didn’t fire anybody in that department.

What a joke. I hope that fired and ex-loyal packer employee sues the organization for all their worth and move the Packers to mlwk or madison. I am sick and tired of green bay packers being so upright and arrogant and thinking they own the world it makes me upchuck just thinking about it! Boy, was I looking forward to the Cowboys creaming the Pack this weekend - too bad it did not happen. Go Cowboys!

So Wood makes a comment that McSensitive Mccarthy over hears.
Wood is then fired by his direct Packer supervisor a couple of days later for making said comment.
Now McCarthy claims that HE DID NOT fire anybody.
Although HE DID NOT directly fire Wood, I believe he was absolutely RESPONSIBLE for the firing. How did Wood's supervisor hear about the comment? If McCarthy feels it was unfair for the maintenance supervisor to fire Wood, why hasn't he stood up for the guy.
McCarthy MAY NOT have directly fired Wood but he sure is responsible for it. Who is he trying to kid? Just not a very intelligent guy, apparently.

If this policy is in place for ALL employees as the Journal Sentinel article said, then how do players get off calling out their coaches in the media without any punishment? No leadership! No character!

The wheels are off the wagon in Green Bay!

I think McCarthy should be fired for not obeying Mike Wood's instructions--either of them. He didn't have the boys ready to kick butt AND he DID lay an egg....2 weeks in a row.

This is a real-world example of the poor decision-making that has been going on in the Packers organization during the past few years. Mike McCarthy and the Packers need to apologize for this unwarranted termination, and they better hope that in doing so they will be able to reclaim the fast-fading respect of Packer fandom.

Looks like tensions are high in Green Bay. Maybe this is a sign that McCarthy and Ted Thompson will be on the chopping block next.

I think "Purrmaid" might be right. Fire the guy who gets paid too much because he said "butt" at work and hire a teenager for minimum wage. I hope Mike Wood buys a purple Favre jersey.. I say they should fire McCathy and get a better coach Gruden or Billick... or my grandma. (go Vikings!)

It doesnt matter if he said "to get the boys ready to kick butt" or not. He was a dedicated worker and the organization should have taken that into consideration before just firing him. Most companies will repremend someone if they make a bad remark but not by fireing them for one mistake. (unless it is a repeat offense) I could see him getting written up if it was that bad. But give me a break! Fire the guy? Our world sure is going to H*** with the way we treat each other. Time to grow up everyone and act like adults!

Perhaps he was getting too close to retirement (50+ years old and 20+ years of service) so they jumped at the chance to unload him from the payroll. (Wouldn't be the first time this type of thing has happened.)

support_local_racing - Are you naive enough to believe that McCarthy did not have a hand in that guys dismissal? If so, you're living in a dream world.

Wow. Too bad Wisconsin is an "at will" state. He should have told McCarthy he needs to take a hike.

"When did this organization become so unfriendly? The Packers used to be a family and community organization that loved it's fans and employees."
********
From the many many posts on this blog about the Favre saga and firing McCarthy and Thompson, YOU so called fans are hypocrites'.
********
The fans use to be friendly and a community organization now just a bunch of whiners and complainers because the Pack is losing and Favre is gone.

wow! I thought I would come here and be one of the first to post..!
McCarthy is the sorriest excuse for a coach. Do you ever see the man smile!?!? Hes always growling...snarling, frowning, or mad...like the dog he is.
Must be all that guilt building up inside, from the way he treated Brett last year.
Last I heard, there was such a thing as "Freedom of Speech".... ?!
Not around McCarthy I guess!!
Loser!

Sounds like Fat Mikey got his feelings hurt and cried to the brass. When did this organization become so unfriendly? The Packers used to be a family and community organization that loved it's fans and employees. Murphy and Thompson have turned this organization into the Scrooge of the NFL.

And yet McCarthy's players are openly ripping coaches in the media with no punishment what so ever. It is like he is afraid of the players...but he is man enough to stand up and fire a 22 year maintenance vet WHO ACTUALLY DOES THE JOB HE IS PAID TO DO. This organization needs to clean house - NOW!

I suspect that he'll get hired by the Vikings and really clean up their field and grounds, and now all those dads and lads doing yard work this fall in their "Woods" Packer groundskeeper jerseys will want to bun them instead of wear them.

Do you people have selective reading or something? "McCarthy told WTMJ radio Friday he’s not in charge of the maintenance department and didn’t fire anybody in that department."
.
My guess is the maintenance worker is lying through his teeth about what he actually said. In my job, if I said something derogatory to another employee in the organization, my job would be on the line, too.

The omnipotent Mike McCarthy can't take a little razzing? Even if the guy said what his supervisors thought he said is that grounds for firing somebody thats worked for the Packers longer than McCarthy and has probably done a better job too.

That's right....let's automatically believe the maintenance worker. If he feels the way many "Packer fans" on this site do, he probably said, "Favre's gonna kick your butts this weekend!"
