Report: Nuclear power won’t solve global warming
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A new report says nuclear power plants would take too long to build and are too expensive to make any impact on global warming.
The report, released by Wisconsin Environment, an environmental advocacy organization, notes scientists believe developed nations must reduce emissions dramatically by 2020 to limit global warming.
The report says the first new nuclear reactor in the United States probably won’t be completed until at least 2016. Money that would go to new plants would be better spent on renewable sources.
State Rep. Mike Huebsch, a West Salem Republican, has pushed to repeal Wisconsin’s moratorium on nuclear power. He says groups like Wisconsin Environment are still living off the hysteria of 1970s meltdowns and will do anything to delay nuclear plant construction.

oldtimer - the last ice age was 10 THOUSAND years ago, not 10 million years ago.
.
Most of the climate models used to extrapolate future anthropogenic warming use a 1% increase per year in CO2 emissions when in fact emissions have not increased more than 0.25% per year, hence much of the fear-mongering involved with climate models. We're already WAY below what climate models said we'd be at as far as carbon increase.

Besides being a worldwide hoax - politicians are using this measely excuse of a crisis to justify government regulation like the proposed "cap and trade". This is a debacle of the worse kind. There is regulation and taxes in the bill that would put america out of business. If you want to see american companies move to other countries just wait to see what this bill/law will do to the ones still here.

Anyone else see the leader of the global warming band wagon, Al Gore, show how much he knows obout earth temperatures (core)? On a late night talk show he stated the center of the earth was several million degrees. Funny, he is never questioned by his followers when he is off by a HUGE margin...the core is only ~7000c.

when was the ice age? 10 12 million years ago. it started to melt and formed our rivers, lakes, streams etc and has been warming ever since. there was no carbon foot print of man then. Our science teacher told us back in 1940 that if we could live 500 years we would see the northern hemiphere become the southern hemiphere and visa versa because the earh is slowly tipping on its axis, I think we have seen some of this.

Global Warming in my opinion is a big hoax. Look at the pass summer, where was the hot summer days? Can Al Gore explain that. Of course not he's not a weather man.

We are in A Global Cooling not global warming..folks need to stop drinking that kool-aid from HIGH flying, energy burning, snake oil salesman Al Gore. The boy put all his marbles in one basket and if the world don't burn up he is broke!

It will take ten years to build so it won't help us now.
We need to use renewable resources but they are expensive and won't be ready for 10 years.
At our present rate of doing anything, looks like we won't be doing anything because we can't wait ten years. Go figure?
Maybe in ten years it won't be a problem since we will be using candles.

I wonder why too?
Could it be either they don't think globally or is it the mega dollars invested in producing energy for the masses. Tax money from the masses and given to the few.

The earth has been warming and cooling for milleniums. Nuclear power is an effective and responsibile choice for future power needs it is not a solution for climate change-nor should it be considered a solution. However, it is the radical environmentalists who reject these ideas. I wonder why?

I don't know, but I assume they were setting a date for irreversible damage, or triggering the events that lead to an extremely hard to inhabit world. Like after day X, we will have set in motion a series of factors that trigger another ice age, which lasts as long as it takes to restore condition to reverse it, or clear the contaminants. It's just a reset button, and it's about to clean up the problem-us. =p

I find it interesting that the experts keep moving the date to support their agenda. Didn't the UN announce back in September that the world would end in four months unless everyone, particularly the United States adopted their policies?

Comet, research global warming before you talk about it! The name doesn't mean its always warmer all the time. Global warming melts the icecaps, which in turn cools the earth as more water soaks up more heat, thus triggering an ice age-in short/in theory. There are many factors such as a polar shift or a change in gravitational fields that play a role as well. There are a lot of factors playing parts and dynamics to this theory. It is a very broad and important topic. You should try and figure out more about what it is, there is much to know, but every little bit helps.

Hello!!!!! Does anyone who believes in this global warming garbage not pay attention to the weather around them??? C'mon people, we've just had one of the coldest summers on record, and think back over the last 10-20 years, can you really say that life on this planet is getting warmer. Get real, this is just a big money grab by the chief illusionist, Albert, I can pay for my carbon footprint, Gore. This is a hoax and isn't worth all the lies that crack smoking believers of this continue to spew!

Hundreds of emails between world's leading climate scientists leaked online... evidence that some of the climatologists colluded in manipulating data to support the widely held view that climate change is real, and is being largely caused by the actions of mankind."

So now that there's no climatological leg for these 'scientists' to stand on, can the world get onto real problems?

Global warming is a real action. However, the cause is open to debate. Just ask the wolly mammoth who was responsible for their demise. We should thank the auto industry and cows for melting the icebergs that carved out Wisconsin!

Mike Huebsch needs to watch "Arithmetic, Energy, and Population" by Dr. Albert Bartlett. If he did, he'd realize nuclear power, renewable power, or convservation are all hopeless in light of the exponential growth of our population.

Funny, you should read what Yahoo has to say about this in their article titled, "The Day Global Warming Stood Still" at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ibd/20091120/bs_...
While, of course, there might be phantom global warming of some kind, it seems that there hasn't been any in the last ten years, this despite the hyperbole and ranting from the left.

garyprimer, Hyperion is an interesting and innovative design that is believed to be quite safe, although it has yet to be proven in production.
.
The key resource that we continue to fail to tap is conservation. Making existing usage more efficient, with green building techniques and lower-energy appliances, is going to "create" many more MW of power over the next two decades than we could possibly build in nuclear power. I'm not opposed to it being part of the mix, but it's far more expensive to do safely than proponents acknowledge, which has sapped interest worldwide, and the nuclear waste problem, which no country has satisfactorily solved, is significant. It's certainly not a short-term solution to, for example, eliminating oil imports or reducing carbon emissions. Due to legitimate public skepticism, it will probably remain a niche solution.
.
It's really, really dumb to call concern about significant safety lapses "hysteria". The Chernobyl accident remains a problem for Ukraine and Russia 23 years later, with radioactivity preventing even agricultural uses of nearby land. Despite years of discussion, the enclosure of the dangerous "sarcophagus" with a modern safe dome remains in a planning and preparation stage, all the while risking a collapse of hastily-laid concrete walls and roof that would spread still more radioactivity around the globe. I don't think that's a minor concern as we contemplate reinvigorating the US nuclear power industry. We can't afford another mistake.

If France can do it with nuclear power, America should be able to.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_pow...
Instead of tediously re-engineering and nitpicking new and different designs for each plant, they should pick one proven design that's been in use for years and mass-produce the hardware and equipment for multiple plants. There will always be risks from nuclear power, but "clean coal" is currently killing thousands each year.

We aren't going to produce enough electrical power with windmills. Photovoltaic solar power cells aren't too useful after dark and also have some environmental concerns as far as manufacture. It would be nice to have most homes equipped with photo and/or hot water solar power, to take advantage of all that roof space. Flat-roofed buildings would also or alternatively benefit if fitted with ABC Supply's green roof system, by insulating and shading them from the sun in the summer, absorbing rain to reduce water runoff and the plants add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the environment.

I'm for developing wind and solar as supplemental power sources, but nuclear generating plants can crank out a lot of consistent power 24 hours a day all year long, day or night, windy or calm.
