Janesville City Council approves Sneakers

The owners of Sneaker’s Sports Bar and Grill will start work today after the city council on Monday approved a proposal for the bar and attached volleyball courts.

Kim Brown said she and Matt DeWitt would run their first volleyball leagues next summer.

The council in October voted down a liquor license for the bar proposal on a 3-3 vote, with neighbors swaying the vote by citing worry about noise, traffic and drunken patrons.

But council members said Brown and DeWitt could bring the request back because council member Russ Steeber had been absent for the first vote.

Both the city’s alcohol license committee and plan commission had recommended approval in October. However, the plan commission’s OK hinged on no volleyball being played past 9 p.m. and no additional outdoor lighting being added.

The bar will be located in the former Basics Co-op building at 1221 Woodman Road, within about 250 feet of residences and near Milton Avenue and the city’s youth baseball diamonds.

joker still doesn't understand that he's using the psychological defense mechanism of projection to attribute his racism onto others.

Or, he clearly knows that he's full of crap and he's just being a joker and something else that starts with j.

TheJoker - if the patrons of Covinas show up and start stabbing each other or displaying guns, I hope Janesville will rear its ugly head!

I wonder what will happen when the patrons of Corvina start to show up? Will racist Janesville rear it's ugly head once again?

my_3_kids, there was no "teeter totter" unless you count the business owner deciding to come back and try again with all 7 council members present. That was his choice.

It is nice to see someone interested in using an existing building, with a great deal of parking, for an investment. I know some neighbors are not thrilled about adult outdoor volleyball, but I believe and hope you find it will not create any more (probably less) inconvenience than the ball park you chose to live by. I don't intend to sound sarcastic, I really feel this proposal is a healthy approach to social options for the city. I do not play baseball or volleyball. However, I do have a few friends that do & I have visited a few games with another friend on occasion & found it to be a casual social event, the few times I did. For some reason, and I do not get excited about it myself, volleyball leagues are popular locally and there is a demand for this pastime. I do hope the tavern continuously monitors its patron's social skills though, inside and out, as any such business is expected to do. As for the few who abuse their "social privileges", my observations have convinced me that others around them, during social events, don't put up with interruptions to their expectations of fun. My sincere apologies if I am proven wrong about your back yard (owned by your neighbor). I guess I couldn't help that last statement, which is sarcastic, I admit.

my3kids - so do you approve of it or not? By the way, I don't understand your "teeter totter" analogy. It was approved by both commissions, and failed only the council. Remember that the next time you are guilty, not guilty, guilty, not guilty when you go for an appeal.....
