Backers ready to make case for Wis. beer tax hike
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Supporters of a plan to raise Wisconsin's beer tax for the first time in 40 years are ready to make their case to lawmakers.
Rep. Terese Berceau told supporters of her plan Tuesday it's time for lawmakers to stand up to the state's powerful beer industry by raising the tax to fight a culture of excessive drinking.
The Madison Democrat spoke before an Assembly committee planning to hear testimony on the plan to raise the beer tax from $2 per 31-gallon barrel to $10. Drinkers would pay slightly more than 2 cents extra per 12-ounce bottle.
The money would be used for programs to reduce alcohol-related crimes and provide substance abuse treatment.

I get more and more aggravated every time some idiot tells me that they are better and greater qualified to decide where MY money should be allocated. I'm SO impressed on how this has worked for me so far! Why don't you get the hell out of my pockets and see how that works!

thekid3477- Wow, you are just so smart. How about raising taxes on the other things we haven't raised in a while, just to raise them? It must be nice to have a lot money like you.

i understand the gripe about not wanting more taxes. but how can you justify not raising the tax on alcohol IN FORTY YEARS?? you cant. this is long overdue and 2 cents a bottle is way more fair than a dollar a pack(at a time) on cigs. go cry a tear in your beer and be thankful you get to pay taxes on your 'vice'.

With little fanfare, a deal is moving forward to direct billions in U.S. tax dollars to an unlikely beneficiary -- the giant British liquor producer that makes Captain Morgan rum.

Right on copperguy; if you can afford those prices, a few pennies more in tax should be no problem. Just my humble opinion , of course.

Here are some taxes to increase:
1) Hotel rooms more than $70/night
2) Car sales greater than $35,000
3) Luxury car rentals
4) First class airline tickets
5) Restaurant bills more than $30/person
6) Legislator per diems
7) Lobbying organizations
8) Salaries greater than $90,000/year
etc. etc.....
In short, quit hiking the taxes on the working class. Go after the privileged. What happened to the theory that the Democrats were for the working class and Republicans were for the rich? Looks like the Dems are for the rich, too!

You know the small family breweries are hurting, so let us raise the tax. I say the people should vote to tax the elected officials as they are working for us voted by the people for the people they get raises that I do not, they have benefits I do not, so they can afford to pay it.

"by raising the tax to fight a culture of excessive drinking."
Right cause an extra 2cents per 12oz is gonna stop people from buying/drinking alcohol.

janesvillean. allot o folks make their living, Brewing, bottling, and marketing beer. Newsflash. Not everyone who drinks beer is bad. Also not everyone who drinks drives drunk. Another newsflash. Some people enjoy being able to drink beer at home since it's one of the only forms of entrainment some people can afford after being taxed to hell on every little thing these days

What a great democrat who supports this, the blue collar workers are getting paid less and want to have something to enjoy and the people they say repersent them are in fact the ones that hurt them. Maybe she does not like beer because after a few beers in the bar she still looks bad.

Wisconsin's beer tax is one of the lowest in the country, and our rate of drunk driving is one of the highest. We also have one of the highest per capita rates of liquor licenses. We can pretend that it's a "culture" and throw up our hands, or we can accept that our tax structure has been controlled by the Tavern League for far too long, and that cheap beer has consequences.

If the lawmakers need to raise any taxes we should vote them out of office. It's irresponsible spending that got us where we are today, and increasing taxes of any kind will just fuel that irresponsibility. We need to say we're mad as hell, and vote their butts onto the street.

Raising the tax on beer will NOT "fight a culture of excessive drinking." The "culture of excessive drinking" has nothing to do with the cost of beer.
And if you believe that "The money would be used for programs to reduce alcohol-related crimes and provide substance abuse treatment." will actually happen, I have a few bridges I'd like to sell you.
Yet another example of knee jerk reaction from the people in Madison who believe they have the answer to everything.
