JANESVILLE — The Janesville School Board passed a budget Tuesday that includes an estimated 1.9 percent tax increase, despite efforts by board members Bill Sodemann and Diedre Richard to make further cuts.

The operational budget is set to increase by 0.87 percent, to about $114 million.

If the school board was thinking about the students instead of how "good" they will look because they are "holding" the line on spending, they would have raised the budget more as they should have done.

If any of you negative complainers voted for the new additions to the schools you shouldn't be complaining. We have to pay for the 70 million that was passed if you didn't remember. Our students deserve every bit of it and then some.

If you're worried now about the cost, wait until the district has to pay more and more for the negotiations with the JEA, especially if it goes to arbitration. Who knows what that will cost the district. There seems to be a lot of complaining about this school board, perhaps Janesville and the JEA should look into what Beloit did. I believe they (Beloit) removed a few members of the school board due to their negative impact on the schools and their poor leadership.

A million dollar increase is called "cutting". Wouldn't it be great if the rest of the world received that kind of "cut"?

Pete - Thanks for posting the phone numbers of everybody on the school board and city councils. I took your advice and called each and every one of them. I told them I was really hoping for a 4% increase but I guess this 1.9% increase will have to do. Hopefully the city council will listen to my suggestions and come in with the max. tax increase. Thanks again Petey.

As I go through life, I continue to learn that those people who are quickest to complain about global (or city, in this case) decisions, are those who play no active part in it. We are all just trying to make the best decisions we know how. If you don't agree with how things are run or decisiona that are being made, then step up to the plate and become one of the decision-makers. Only then will you see how difficult it is sometimes to satisfy all parties while still managing to get things done.

whythink - Why would they show up at any school board meetings when it's so much easier to complain from the comfort of your computer.

Suggest removal Bullcrap because tax(user fee) increase after increase. Exactly where do we taxpayers come up with ALL additional money when we are EXISTING on meager unemployment compensation. Why dont these people get out from behind their desks and walk, talk with average citizens?Clueless "leaders" who only see spend, spend, spend more.
.
I believe the school board meetings are open to the general public. How many have you showed up for?
