Darien police committee recommends management change
DARIEN--The Village of Darien Police and Public Safety Committee on Wednesday night voted to recommend the village board put Administrator Marc Dennison in charge of the police department’s administrative duties.
The change would take some management responsibilities away from Acting Chief Mike Maltese, who is a union member. Maltese would still be in charge of patrol duties.
The committee also recommended the board give the committee the power to settle with suspended Police Chief Steve DeVoy. DeVoy has been suspended since Dec. 1. In March, the board voted to fire him, but a hearing is pending to uphold or reverse that decision.
The board will take up the matters Monday night.

don't know the laws regarding chief of police, but a Sheriff doesn't (technically) need to be certified in law enforcement (just a resident of the county). kinda crazy, I say.

Shane
Were you around 20 years ago when Mr Evans was a State Cop? He was elected Chief of the Rescue Squad. There was a fight between him & the Township & Village about how it would be run. He started his own squad took all the files from the Fire Dept office. Even took the titles for the vehicles to the DOT & got them changed to the new name,
When the dust settled everything went back to the Village & Township. He could be on the Rescue Squad, but never be an officer.
Don’t get me wrong I know & like John but you have to be careful

Don't judge the villagers until you know what the 4 morons on the board have been doing to all us taxpayers. Don't you get it - majority rules and in this case the majority is morons.
Now that I know it, they will be voted out ASAP.
Not just by me, by everybody. I'll be sure to share the info with everybody I LOOK at in town.

god this town is so hillbilly. I chuckle at all these blogs and wonder how many googly eyed - mildly retarded people actually live in Darien? Is the whole town full of idiots? Is the police department ran by a bunch of dorks? Or is it just one dork? but PLEASE keep the comments rolling...its fun to read about your screwed up town on such a crappy rainy day.

The problem is that the Sergeant is a union member. You can't have a union member running a police department. I have said that from the beginning. Either Maltese had to step down as acting chief or leave the union and he wanted it both ways. You can't be management and union protected at the same time, it never works out properly. Removing Maltese as acting chief, that was a good call.
Now making the VA in charge makes no sense to me at all. He's not a cop, he never has been a cop.....ever. What qualifies him to assume the responsibilities as acting chief? I would have chosen Chuck Lankford as acting chief. Chuck has worked for that village for 18+ years. If anybody deserves the job, it's Chuck.
Nothings going to change.

He knows nothing about policing, obviously. He's not a policeman.
The question is, what did the acting chief do wrong that required this unusual action?

Ahh, this will work..........sure.......
If you believe that then I have some ocean front property in Darien for sale.
How do they justify putting a man in charge of the Police Department management who worked for the Village for six (6) hours and then sued the Village because of legal Police actions? What does he possibly know about such things?
