University of Wisconsin reports stimulus impact
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin System says it has received $83 million in federal stimulus money so far and that saved or created 137 jobs.
The university reported Thursday that through September it had only spent about $5.2 million of what has been sent in 263 awards.
The Madison campus received the most money at $75.4 million followed by Milwaukee at just over $4.4 million.
Earlier this week the state reported that nearly 8,300 jobs were either created or saved thanks to the stimulus. That report did not include totals from the university system or federal money that was awarded directly to local communities, private businesses and others.
Gov. Jim Doyle said Thursday he believes the impact of the stimulus is much broader than the reports show.

IMO, your math is flaky. The tapayer is on the hook for the whole 83 million...not just when the university system spends it.

What the heck is saved or created? There is no way to measure a saved job. None, zilch, nothing. So this is more political speak for self promoting legislators, that live off our taxes. The reality is, the stimulus is temporary at best and creates nothing. Cut taxes for all and then see a real stimulus.

Just for the record, $5.2m for 137 jobs is roughly $37,956 per job. So, with the $77.2m leftover, they can create another 2,049 jobs. That is a HUGE dent. I wonder what the remaining 532,486 people are gonna do???

Doyle says that 8300 jobs were created. Woo-hoo!!! Just 526,372 more to go! Not including the people who aren't receiving unemployment compensation of course.

What a dolt; pointless is not doing the math and realizing the 137 jobs, created or saved, cost the TAXPAYER over $605,000.00 each.
Your idea of meaningful is one of the large reasons this country is so far in debt. If you think this is a fiscal and prudent fiscal use of money, over half a million dollars each for jobs, get off your high horse and send more of your money in to the government to fund it.

I consider myself politicallyt nuteral. 137 jobs is nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands that are being LOST every month. Maybe someone should ask the thousans that are being laid off by the day how that stimus is working out for them.

the system is corrupt, board of directors will get there bonuses even though people need jobs. Maybe 83 million should of went to feed the poor and homeless. that would of saved alot more than the jobs.

I didn't read any political bias into OneLife's response, just a "Holy Cow!" response. (I think somebody needs a nap)

That's 83 million dollars for university programs and education supported by 137 jobs. The payroll is only a fraction of that. But use your pointless comparisons if that's what's meaningful to you and meets your political bias.
