HAYWARD — Grocery shoppers in Hayward got an unexpected surprise when a 125-pound black bear wandered inside and headed straight for the beer cooler.

The bear made his stop Friday night at Marketplace Foods in Hayward, walking through the automatic doors and heading straight into the liquor department.

The bear calmly climbed up 12 feet onto a shelf in the beer cooler where it sat for about an hour while employees helped evacuate customers and summoned wildlife officials.

Officials from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources tranquilized the bear and took it out of the store. Store workers say the bear seemed content in the cooler and didn't consume any alcohol.

Maybe all the good bear dens were taken and he was simply looking for an intoxicating place to chill for the winter.

The Marketplace IGA is on an incredibly busy street. It must have been having a grand old time dodging the traffic....

This is newsworthy for us, but I bet those Hayward folks don't find this funny....the bears are really getting out of control up there....summer homers' feed them and now this is the result. A bear that isn't afraid of humans is a very dangerous bear!

Yep!! I now live near Hayward and they are around alright. We have them on our deck quite often! Bird feeders are the attraction!

The bears in Hayward aren't afraid of much. When my grandparents lived in Hayward they would come right up on their deck and rummage around. My parents live up there now and they have gotten bears up on their second story deck. They now have to take down every bird feeder every night. It really takes a lot to scare them away unfortunately.

It was probably a protest against the beer tax.
