MADISON — Drivers under age 18 would not be allowed to text while behind the wheel under a bill the state Senate will consider on Tuesday.

Wisconsin would become the 10th state to ban texting by young drivers should the measure pass. A bill that would ban text messaging for all drivers has been introduced in the Assembly.

Momentum is growing nationwide to ban text messaging, which is seen as a distraction that leads to inattentive driving and accidents.

Nineteen states have passed laws banning text messaging for all drivers.

The Senate measure would make a violation subject to fines between $20 and $400, the same penalties as inattentive driving.

A bill banning texting for all drivers passed the Senate two years ago but died in the Assembly.

There need to be rules like this because there are too many stupid people out there that lack common sense. Texting should be treated like smoking, if you need to do it, find a place where you won't be a danger to others.

TEXTING WHILE DRIVING IS ABSOLUTELY STUPID AND DANGEROUS! "Oh sorry I ran you over I was too busy texting and not watching the road" If you must text..PARK IT! I'm all for this ban for all ages!

I don't see the problem texting while driving.... I'm sending this message from my BlackBerry while on the interstate... Needless to say I never have ha.......darnit, just went off the road.... The state should pass this law.... FYI, joking about this. I am one who is not a fan of texting while driving after seeing a video on You Tube of young teens texting while driving and getting into an accident.

Its hard to text while you drive especially when you already have to play with your radio, GPS unit, flick you cigarette ashes, eat food, and try to hide your illegal contraband. I dont have time to pay attention to my driving let alone any texting.

I don't text while I drive because I can't hold my beer and cigarette in one hand.

A $20-$400 fine? Let's get serious with this--these people are easily as dangerous as those who like to drink and drive.......

Why just those under 18?

Is a 19 year old more likely to be able to text while driving safely?

Or a 29 year old?

How about we make it illegal to text while driving and call it a day?
