Wis. Senate passes life-jacket bill

MADISON — The Wisconsin state Senate has passed a proposal that would require children under age 10 to wear a life jacket when on board boats up to 26 feet long.

Wisconsin and Virginia are the only states without such a requirement now. Children on boats operating in federal water are required to wear life jackets.

Current Wisconsin law requires life jackets on board for all passengers. However, they do not have to be worn.

The bill passed Tuesday would require those ages 10 and under to wear the life jacket unless they are in the cabin or below deck. The bill originally applied to those under age 12, but was amended to cover those under age 10.

First offense is punishable with a warning, followed by a $50 fine for second offense and $100 after that.

"As for the Lifejackets... If you are too stupid not to protect yourself or your family ... suffer the consequences, whether it be a ticket, or death from DROWNING!!!!!"

Exactly my_3_kids! I couldn't agree with you more that people should suffer NATURAL consequences (injury, death, drowning, etc..)for their stupidity. BUT...I don't agree that we need a law for this. This is just one more thing that the government is going to force us to do, and not even allow us to make the right decision on our own. I'll bet that 90% of us have enough common sense to put a life jacket on our children while in a boat, but it's the other 10% that the government is "worried" about. I say let those 10% suffer their consequences. Let them learn from their mistakes.

Hey, Why fight it.. (as I stated in an earlier post) Public opinion means Squat.. They ( politicians) ask for your vote, and as soon as they are elected, every thing we ask or comment on goes on deaf ear.
But these last 2 bills they passed have a lot of merit behind them.. Being in the Medical field for quite some time, I have seen first hand on the "ILL" effects of Non wearing boat patrons, and Drivers (Not just Cellphone using, texting teenagers, Make up applying, Newspaper reading, and {the one that I love the most} the "coffee drinking-face shaving- tie knotting moron") that drives 80 miles an hour on a freeway just to get to the next rest area to get a fresh cup of Joe..
Where does it end??? I really think (at least for these instances) it doesn't.. Too many lives are disrupted because of idiots like these (out on the road... Lost lives, income and time..
be glad that you are here to be able to voice your opinions , because there are many that can't, because of accidents caused by these people.... As for the Lifejackets... If you are too stupid not to protect yourself or your family ... suffer the consequences, whether it be a ticket, or death from DROWNING!!!!!

In this bill there might also be some pork or maybe another raise for the politicians. It is common to have a common sense bill to get the nasty stuff passed.

Yes fool_on_the_hill, I for one have noticed the rapid expansion of the nanny state. It's quite a scary thought actually, to think that someday soon we will be told what to do, and what not to do, in every aspect of our life. I am currently reading the book 1984 by George Orwell, and I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks there is nothing wrong with living in a nanny state!

The Wisconsin Senate has approved bills banning texting while driving, mandating school anti-bullying policies, requiring life jackets for kids 10 and under, and helping podiatrists with lawsuits. However, they have passed no bills promoting jobs or small business in the private sector where the most jobs are created. HMM, Time for change?

I LOVE a new law a day don't you? Every lame, loser politician needs to have his stupid name on a law, so they can say "hey I passed that". Stupid.

Has anyone else noticed the rapidly accelerating expansion of the nanny state into every facet of our lives lately? It won't be long until every possible action is either mandated or prohibited.

woodsman, relax - perhaps they should have a law about spelling and grammar - with more education, woodsman, perhaps you'd make more rational comments!

Good to know our State is in such great shape that Senate can concentrate on these truly important matters. When will they concentrate on trival matters(Unemployment compensation, jobs, homelessness, high taxes, fees)???

Most laws are common sense & shouldn't be stuffed down your throat. All this is is job security for the ones making laws. Enough is enough. Free country, yea right!

The laws of nature will always trump the laws of man. People will find a way of letting nature run it's course. Living on a busy street, leaving guns lying around. Teaching your kids how to shoot up heroin. They'll find a way.

woodsman - people should have the common sense to make their children WEAR life jackets on a boat. Unfortunately, it seems the only way this will happen is if a law is passed. Most laws simply tell clueless people what they SHOULD ALREADY be doing.

In other news, congress passed a law which requires children to set the table before dinner and brush their teeth before bed.
