BTC revises tax levy increase
Taxes for Blackhawk Technical College district residents will rise, but not by the whopping 4.9 percent tentatively approved last June.
The BTC Board on Wednesday night approved a $20.75 million tax levy for its 2009-20 budget. That’s an increase of just 0.6 percent from last year.
The move recognizes the area is suffering through hard times, something the board and administration have heard loud and clear from taxpayers, said BTC President Eric Larson.

Just that must wow that is nice. Now add on the increase for the Janesville school district. Also add on the increase for the city budget. Now lets see how much that adds up to for the year. Oh wait and we can do it all over again next year. If things get better with the economy They will push for more of a increase. Funny where I work we have laid off quite a few employees. Now they push for more work out of lest people due to the times. Why can't the same apply to these areas as well money wise.

The article in the paper did not say anything about how much of a raise the staff received. The radio mentioned something about them getting a raise, but does anyone know the percent. Probably a nice one since they have a big surplus of money from high enrollment.

I read in the story in a print copy of The Gazette that the tax increase on $100,000 of assessed valuation under the new budget plan will cost $2.44 more than last year. I think that is an excellent and positive response to the difficult economic conditions in our area. With the enrollment increases reported by BTC, such a minimal tax increase is acceptable. My elected representatives in Madison should take a lesson from the appointed BTC Board.

While a agree with the gripe about this non-elected authority levying taxes, I think this may be a case of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. Blackhawk Tech is one of the primary locations that people will go in order to learn new skills when the job change is thrust upon them. When we limit the growth of education, we limit our overall economic growth. This is an investment in the future.

Given that they are not elected what gives them the right to levy taxes?

BTC is Taxation Without Representation. That's when people can't vote for who's taking our money.
