CHIPPEWA FALLS—A Wisconsin lawmaker arrested three times for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in 10 months plans expects to enter a Minnesota clinic this week.

State Rep. Jeff Wood told the Leader-Telegram in Eau Claire Monday that he expects to enter a stricter, 30 to 45-day program at Veterans Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn. Thursday.

Wood said he was out on a day pass last week from an inpatient treatment facility when he was arrested in Tomah in western Wisconsin. He acknowledged taking more prescription medication than was prescribed.

The Chippewa Falls independent was first elected to the Assembly as a Republican in 2002. Wood has said he doesn’t plan to resign, but won’t seek re-election next fall.

Wood acknowledged he has a serious abuse program.

Money, status or being a vet has nothing to do with how addiction hits. It can hit anyone at anytime without warning. Whatever reasons he may have upon entering rehab, let's just hope that he receives an awakening while staying there, and comes out with the appropriate outcome....sobriety, and possibly self respect and love.

Swisschick: I never said he was in this "meaningfully". I just said that thousands do recover each year and to assume "he will be back to his old tricks" would require a crystal ball. Only time will tell how Wood will do.

Don't have a crystal ball. I just know that's what many, many people do. They're not sorry until caught.
BTW - Didn't know you had one either. (To know he's in this meaningfully).

SwissChick: Didn't know you had a crystal ball to read this lawmaker's future. I am just glad to see he has entered treatment. Not everyone succeeds at recovery, but thousands do every year in this country.

He'll be doing this because of the 3 cases staring at him in the face now. He thinks they (judges) will be more lenient on him at sentencing. Then he'll be back to his old tricks.

Must be nice to just walk off the street and get help at a veterans hospital! I'm a veteran and get told year after year, were not taking any new patients right now. Something wrong here, for all VET"S should be serviced, don't you think? They said we'll take care of you for life for serving your country, they meant until were done using you.

garyprimer, it's a VA center -- presumably he's using his veterans benefits. (He was in the Navy and Naval Reserve.)
.
TCB, he probably understands that when his cases (three pending!) come to trial, having completed a rehab program will help the judge decide in his favor.

I think jail time would help as well. 3 time loser.

It's public because he keeps getting arrested for DUI. (Alcohol and drugs). BYW, all being public information.

I despise the fact that this is being so public. Addiction is such a horrible thing, and to have to explain your addiction over and over again, I can only imagine it makes it that much worse. This man is in my prayers, and I hope that he can come to terms with his internal turmoil and return to happiness, or find it.

So now it is OK! he is a drug addict and he needs to resign as soon as possible and if not taken from his position. when will people wake up on this, go to rehab and keep your job, go to rehab and keep your job, over and over. But it is Ok! because he went to rehab.

That gives him a better opportunity to stick with the program and begin to recover, (insurance).

Hopefully, this is the last time we will ever have to hear (read) about this guy.

Good luck, get better, and get gone.

Of course he isn't going to resign. He would lose his health insurance and have to pay for the rehab out of his pocket.

I can say from experience that it is sad that people only get help once the noose is tightened. No arrest and he wouldn't have sat at home that night and said, I better get help. Most people with addictions must hit bottom before they reach out.
