Ho-Chunk buys Beloit casino property
BELOIT—The Ho-Chunk Nation today announced it has bought the Beloit property where two other tribes have long planned to build a casino.
The nation bought the 26-acre parcel for $4 million from a developer, Ho-Chunk Vice President Daniel Brown said.
The Ho-Chunk think they have a better chance of getting approval of an application to place the land into trust for the purpose of building an off-site casino, Brown said.
The St. Croix and Bad River Band Chippewa tribes have been working since 1999 on the application. Beloit voters in 2000 voted in favor of the casino project. The project has been mired in federal court as the tribes appeal a federal policy change that made it harder to get approval for off-site casinos.
Both Brown and Joe Hunt, spokesman for the two tribes’ project, said it’s possible the Ho-Chunk and the Chippewa could work together on an application.

janesvillean: I would be absolutely thrilled if you are correct about the Ho Chunks' intentions in Beloit. I tried to get more information from the Beloit Chamber of Commerce and the other tribes in Beloit this afternoon, but there was no one around to answer my questions.

2centsworth, the case was the other way around. The tribe was trying to get a refund on a basis that the court ultimately rejected. That means the tax was collected at the time of sale.

.
I wouldn't be certain that Ho-Chunk Nation intends to mothball the property. After all, it's been very close to dead as a project for a long time, so spending $4 million just as insurance is not a great investment. And they have been expanding their other casino operations.

I think its great news, actually. The HoChunk have shown that they know how to do this right. Have you ever been to their places??? Even DeJope (Bellagio) is pretty good for around here! Irregardless, though...we need the jobs and the economic boost around here, and I bet they are just the folks to do it. I hope it works out!

Don't get too excited, folks. I have a feeling that this may permanently shut the door on any casino in Beloit. If you recall, Ho-Chunk spent millions (or close to it) trying to claim this land before. The reason? That Ho-Chunk tribe did NOT want a Beloit casino bringing them competition. I have a sick feeling that the Ho-Chunks are just going to let the land sit empty. They do not want a casino in Beloit or any other city other than Wisconsin Dells. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think today's announcement is anything to celebrate.

Better hurry, only about 12 months left to bribe Diamond Jim before he's out of office, but I'm sure he'll find the time for one of his favorite special interests, he always does.
