PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (AP) — A mother is accused of holding her 10-year-old daughter under water in Lake Michigan to punish her for her sins.

Port Washington police said Thursday officers were called to the lakefront Aug. 26 by witnesses who had called 911.

Police say the woman had taken her daughter to the lake, forced her face under the water and knelt on her as the girl struggled to free herself. The girl's 13-year-old sister tried to intervene.

The 10-year-old told investigators her mother said she needed to be punished because she was a sinner.

The girls were released to the custody of their father.

jviers77 - There is nobody to get a license from to have kids. We as individuals are in control of our own lives. There is no higher authority. Everyone in the USA should know this, and do whatever is necessary to protect this right.

Another example of how teaching blind faith as a virtue ends badly.

Stupid mother. I only wonder how else she has "punished" her kids. Makes me think: This kid's only 10 years old and likely scarred for life. Maybe Dick Chaney can "waterboard" the mother.

another example of religion gone wrong...seriously, though, why can't we figure out some way to qualify people to be parents? We need a license to drive, a license for our pets, we even need a permit to put a deck on our house. Why not documentation saying "you are fit to procreate."

Parenthood is definitely a calling. If you are crazy, try not to have kids.

How else do you make sin leave the body?

so sad that there are thousands of people out there who cannot have children and would be great parents, and yet these are the kind of people who have kids
