Closed lunch coming sooner at Parker High
JANESVILLE — Parker High School ninth-graders will be required to stay at school for lunch starting with second semester, Superintendent Karen Schulte said.
Parker Principal Steve Schroeder had planned to phase in a closed lunch for freshmen over a longer period, but Schulte said at Tuesday's school board meeting that the change would come sooner.
Craig High School started closed lunch for freshmen when school opened this month.

tipi16; lets see, fast food workers make approx. minimum wage (or a little better) - welcome to "union wages" for the school cafeteria workers. Dont worry, if Card Check goes thru your $5 foot long will be $8 or $10!

King Wok you can get a great meal for around $5.00 and Sub Way "$5.00 Foot Long" My son says that you can get more at the fast food places for the same amount if not less than at school. Last week my 6'4" 220 lbs son averaged $8.50 for lunch and was still hungry He had to stay at school cuz of no car to get off campus.

We've put a lot of money into remodelling both High Schools and lunches should be eaten at the schools. Bunches of kids piling into cars and then racing to the different restaurants for lunch makes it dangerous for anyone out driving anywhere near the High Schools during the scheduled lunch periods. When people living here did have jobs, it made it very difficult for all working anywhere near the High Schools to go out and get anything for their lunches and they didn't have cafeterias and hot meals available through their employers.
$6.50 for lunch at school? What does is cost for meals eaten away from school every day and how is that afforded. There is another option.. called brown bagging it.

sdakota, I don't know the specific prices of all items, but from what I hear $6.50 is not unusual. I agree with you that the prices are too high. Does anyone know how the prices are set? My son knows I keep an eye on how much he's spending for lunch so he gets a sub, chips, and drink for around $4.

Hopefully Parker will adjust some of the food prices. My son paid $2.00 for a hot dog, last year it was $2.00 for 2 hot dogs. It cost $6.50 for his meal. Meals should be more affordable.

You knew that Parker would be made to lock step with Craig. Forty years and nothing changes.

This will bring in more potential revenue because more kids will probably be buying school lunch. Plus its not like these Freshman can go to a restaurant by themselves anyway.

How are rules going to drive the kids away?
And I doubt that keeping the freshmen at school for lunch will drastically change local businesses. Freshmen won't miss what they didn't have for their first eight years of school.
I went to Evansville High School, the only class that was free to leave for lunch were seniors. In the fall of 1985 lunch as closed for seniors. My class was the first senior class to have closed lunch. We didn't like it, but what choice did we have?
In my opinion none of the kids should be allowed to leave for lunch.
