Wis. board considers deer control options
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin wildlife officials want to nearly double the length of the November gun deer hunt.
Biologists are looking for ways to control the state's deer herd after the Natural Resources Board suspended its Earn-A-Buck program this spring. That program required hunters to kill an antlerless deer before they could take a buck.
The Department of Natural Resources has proposed extending the 9-day gun hunt to 16 days.
The agency also wants to add another two weeks or so to the archery season in January. Hunters who kill an antlerless deer in herd control zones after Dec. 25 would get a bonus buck tag.
The changes would begin in 2010. The Natural Resources Board is expected to decide Sept. 23 whether to send the new seasons to public hearings.
