Fond du Lac resident bags 30-point buck
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — A Fond du Lac resident bagged a 30-point whitetail buck by bow.
Wayne Schumacher shot the deer Sunday night from a tree stand near Rosendale.
Schumacher says the shot covered about 15 yards and the deer ran about 60 or 70 yards before going down.
Schumacher noted he’s hunted with bow and gun for more than 30 years and has known people who have seen the buck, but it was hard to believe.
The deer, referred to as “Lucky Buck,” has an inside antler spread of 20½ inches. Its field-dressed weight was about 225 pounds. Estimates are that the deer is at least 4½ years old.
Schumacher says the memory will be preserved with a shoulder mount.

Jose de Ortega y Gasset, a Spanish pholosopher said,"One does not hunt to kill. One kills in order to have hunted." Only those who have hunted can understand this.

annie50 - A hunt for the sake of the antlers? So you're assuming that this hunter isn't going to eat the meat? Nice ignorant, uneducated statement. Hunters don't just hunt for antlers, they hunt for meat. If a trophy like this comes past, then it's an even greater experience. People that don't hunt will never get it, and that's fine. But don't sit here and judge those that do get it.

Cardtrader - You don't have to understand it. Hence why you obviously don't hunt.

So Cardtrader, should we shoot only yearling bucks, fawns and does? This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that probably only presented itself because of countless hours of scouting, practicing his marksmanship, and sitting in the woods seeing absolutely nothing. The thing is those hours sitting in solitude are still better than anything on TV or many other ways we waste our time. Great job!

I knew right from the start, upon reading the headline, that we would see some posters lashing out at anyone that hunts wild game.
Well, forget all the stereotypes you associate with hunters. They aren't all just a pack of bloodthirsty killers just out stumbling around, all liquored up with a loaded shotgun.
We are four months away from 2010. It's not as though they're out on the prairies of 1850, raping the buffalo of their hides.
I'm not a hunter myself, but I respect the right to do so. I can understand that hunting is most often a family tradition, passed down from generation to generation.
Some people argue "Why do people have to hunt anymore? There's a supermarket right down the street". Let's not condemn the person out there sitting quietly, respectfuly, waiting to bag a meal for the family table.

When I made my comment about killing the beautiful 30 point buck was not to say deer hunting wasn't needed it was to ask how or let me say why not let the 30 point go to live on and be the vocal point of the story of the one that got away and is roaming in the woods kinda like the movie the Deer hunter

I don't think those questioning why one hunts are necessarily being critical. I don't hurt, rarely eat meat, and have nothing against hunters. I just don't think that I could kill a deer or any other animal. If others want to hunt, that is fine. The only animal sport that I find totally disgusting is bullfighting. I don't know a lot about it, but it just seems like it is torture to the bull (the way it is such a slow death). I didn't realize it was deerhunting season yet.

I love animals, but I do recognize the necessity of conservation. The deer's natural predators tend to be animals that have an imperfect relationship with humans.

We either shoot the deer and they die a quick death, or they starve slowly from over population - take your pick.

lol, you non-hunters haven't the slightest clue. Go back to whatever it was you weren't doing and we ( the hunters ) will go out and harvest, beautiful, wild animals that god has put here for us! There on my wall, in my freezer, and so many stories that you will never care to hear about. Last year thank god for bowhunting because being unemployed, there was no other way.

all you people complaining about killing this poor animal need to go lay down by your dish. yes it is about being able to brag about the beautiful animal after you have it on your wall. and yes it is about eating it. but it is somthing that has to be done also. or we will all have to pay more for car insurance when there are more deer car accidents. also have to pay more for your food when the deer eat the farmers crops because there are many more deer. you need to think about what you are complaining about here.

I agree with cardtrader. The hunt all for the sake of a head of antlers. A beautiful animal wasted because someone wanted to brag about the kill. Sad.

displacedworker: thanks for the link! It was a great video clip and the pictures were good too. He is definately going to be the talk of the town this hunting season, and rightfully so. Personally, I don't hunt or eat venison, but I don't hold it against those who do. For some it's a sport and for others it's how they support their families. I don't understand how people can bash others for putting food on the table. Deer hunting is legal folks. Get over it! It is necessary to keep the deer population under control. Cardtrader:We don't hunt cows because they're not free roaming wild animals. Their population is controlled by their owners. Use some common sense once in awhile.

Good shot, good kill, good retrieval, congratulations to the hunter for a trophy non-typical Whitetail. He will be able to eat it too, as he did not leave it to waste overnight in the woods.

How do you hunters find it in your heart to draw back the bow or pull the trigger on such a beautiful animal, it's not every day that you see a 30 point buck. Does it mean that much to you to kill this animal just to hang it on the wall to gloat at and brag about the great hunt. I never could quite grasp that picture.
