MADISON — U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, a Democrat from La Crosse, will not run for governor next year, a Democratic Party official told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The official was informed of the decision but spoke on condition of anonymity because the Democrat was not authorized to announce it before Kind’s Thursday afternoon conference call with reporters. Kind’s campaign office said he would make an "important announcement" during the call.

Kind has been making the rounds across Wisconsin in recent weeks meeting with Democratic Party leaders and others to discuss a potential run.

The talk has always been that Kind and Barrett wouldn't run against each other. Maybe neither of them want it. It doesn't say much for the sorry condition our state finds itself in.

Not sure whether this indicates that Lawton or another potential candidate like Falk or Barrett has already wrapped up more support, but that's probably the general basis of it.

Too bad. He would have made a great candidate.
