MILTON—Milton City Administrator Todd Schmidt plans to announce his resignation today.

Schmidt, who has been the city’s administrator for the last seven years, this afternoon accepted a verbal offer to become Administrator/Economic Development Director for the village of Waunakee.

Schmidt said exact contract details were pending, but he plans to give the city of Milton a 30-day notice of his resignation. He said he'll remain at work in Milton through Sept. 21.

The village of Waunakee is a community of 12,000 people located just north of Madison. Schmidt said the move to Waunakee will allow him professional growth, and will fit his family’s needs.

The Waunakee village board has been interviewing candidates for the position since the first week of August, Village Clerk Julee Helt said today. Helt said two village employees have shared village administrator duties since October 2009, after a former village administrator resigned.

At 7:30 p.m. tonight, the Milton city council will discuss recruiting a new city administrator, as well as possibly hiring an interim city administrator and an interim budget consultant.

Greatlady I agree on the clerk/treasurer, maybe she will run for City Administrator since she wants all the power anyway...

What a wonderful day for the citizens of Milton! Now if Waunakee would just take the Clerk/Treasurer too, it would be an even better day. I don't agree that Mr. Schmidt has done a good job for Milton and was only here to build his resume. I feel sorry for the taxpayers of Waunakee.

The City of Milton is clearly a better place today, after 7 years of Mr Schmidt's service. The bottom line is that he has been a "company man" and has performened his administrative duties as expected. I do not agreed with several opinions he has, however his opinions have been quite responsible, other than the handling of the latest Fire Department issues. While I do not appreciate how it has been handled recently, I respect his agenda for the City. After all, his job is to recomend goals to the City Council how to achieve them.

Look out Waunakee. Here comes a person that will help raise the taxes. How many jobs did the United Ethanol plant bring to Milton? We gave them big tax breaks. What about the storm water run off program? More money to pay for Milton residents and businesses. He surrounded himself with great yes-men. This day couldn't come soon enough for the city of Milton.

Regarding the comment about him doing a - "great job" - I would disagree. I thought he did better than average and hope Milton can get someome with some experience. How did he do with the wonderful ethanol plant?

Seven years is pretty much the average tenure for a municipal manager/administrator. It may be theoretically possible to promote from within, but the search committee is going to be charged with finding the most qualified candidate. Unless an assistant has been groomed for the position, I wouldn't expect them to come out on top when up against other applicants.

facts101: I agree wholeheartedly with you. I know Todd personally and I think he's done a great job for the city. The're going to be hard pressed to find someone who can do as good a job as he did.

I have to agree with Card, many Miltonites I've talked with were less than satisfied with the work this administrator did.

cardtrader do you know the person?
Are you aware of what Todd has done and given to the city? I will bet anyone who welcomes losing a highly skilled and educated person from the ranks is an idiot.
